LA Times on Nevada

Posted by DavidNYC

The LAT has a piece on Nevada-as-tossup-state. Not much new here. Basically, Yucca Mountain might be an issue, but only if we raise it. It strikes me as a definite political winner, so I'm not sure why Kerry hasn't started running ads on it. He should.

The author also says that Bush's cowboy image plays well in NV, but doesn't offer any polling to support it. In fact, two months ago, Bush only got a 48% approval rating there. And though Kerry's been behind by double-digits in the polls, no one has conducted any polling since the middle of March - which is a long time ago in political terms, and prior to any big Kerry ad buys.

Thanks for the link! I'm really impressed with your site, by the way.

What is Nevada but a big empty triangular desert with a toilet in the bottom corner?

Do you see the lack of ads as just one more oddity in Kerry's media campaign, or an outlier? It seems from the tone of your comments that you approve of Kerry's strike into enemy territory (a misquote from an earlier posting) -- I'd like to hear more about what you think can be done in NV.

My understanding is that, with the latest huge ad buy, Kerry is definitely on the air in NV. He's just using his standard bio ads, which Luke (always a tough critic) rates favorably.

It's possible that Kerry is saving this bullet (ie, Yucca Mountain) for late in the campaign - maybe they've determined that this is something to use only when voters are really paying attention. (Or perhaps, a bit more distressingly, they simply haven't had the time to focus on any state-specific ads yet.)

In any event, bringing up Yucca seems like a no-lose proposition for Kerry. So - Bring. It. On. (Unless someone can show me otherwise.)

As a native Nevadan, I have to say that most of the people here are more scared of a terror attack than nuclear waste shoved up our state. Sad and a personal observation (I live in rural central NV). Hopefully Vegas and Reno will swing for Kerry and punch up the 5 electorals. ABB.
