Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Endorses Bush

Posted by

The largest paper in the state of Arkansas endorsed President Bush today (subscription required). This isn't surprising because it endorsed him in 2000 and has continously supported him since.

However, Arkansas is still in play. A new poll by Opinion Research was released yesterday and has both candidates tied at 48%. This same poll gave Bush a 9 point lead just two weeks ago. Former President Clinton is said to have asked Kerry to make a visit to Arkansas and might make one on Kerry's behalf himself. The NY Daily News reports today:

Clinton is seen by many as a key weapon in Kerry's plan to overtake President Bush in the poll that counts - next Tuesday's vote. And with a new tracking poll showing Bush and Kerry now even in Arkansas, a state the GOP thought it had sewn up, there was speculation Clinton may add his home state to his itinerary.

"That is something that we're not yet ready to reveal," said Kerry adviser Joe Lockhart, who served as an aide to the former commander-in-chief. Among other possible battleground stops for Clinton this week is New Mexico.

If nothing else, this has to leave the Bush campaign feeling uneasy and possibly looking at targeting Arkansas with new ad buys that will cost them elsewhere. As for Clinton, the Daily News article says that he'll talk with Diane Sawyer this morning on Good Morning America.

Don't under-estimate the potential importance of states like Arkansas. So many states are looking like coin-flips at this point with possible major influences being things like weather. I like the idea of making more of the Bush states coin-flips.

I saw a long list of newspaper endorsements last night. Does anybody know if there are any papers that endorsed Gore last time that went Bush this time? And how many besides Orlando and the New Yorker have shifted from Bush to Kerry this time?

Sorry to go off topic, but Rasmussen is out today and has KERRY up two points. It is the first time Kerry has lead since August 23.

Have you heard about the 380 tonnes of explosives that vanished in Iraq ? Some good "ammunition" for Kerry.

You can go here for endorsement information.

Really bad headlines. They lost the nuclear technology AND 380 tons of high-grade explosives in Iraq? Our allies are tragically untrained. There will be no election in Janaury, that's for sure. No wonder even Republicans call Bush "incompetent." We need Kerry before this really does turn into Vietnam.

And the stock market is at its lowest level all year and falling. Bush really scares people. Is the rasmussen poll a fluke or a harbinger of what the other polls will show.

Keep up the GOTV,
Marc

Guys Clinton inspired a lot of people today. I pray that Kerry wins this election. In all aspects I can't see us losing Florida guys. The people down there are so motivated and pumped up. Clinton will be down their tonight. Look for a turnout of 119 million on election day.

godfrey, Clinton is going to Florida too? I hadn't heard that before. I heard he may going up the Mississippi River Valley to campaign for Kerry in Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota, but nothing about Florida.

@ Mark:

"Clinton, who also planned a solo campaign event in Florida later on Monday, criticized President Bush for "more of the same" bad policies."

Look at the article on USA Today:

Breaking news, Gallup has Bush up 5 (51-46)in a national poll. What do we make of this? Gallup has been known to favor Bush.

That is down from 8 last week for Gallup.

I say "Bah!" to Gallup. They are not worth looking at. Plus, their RVs show a two-point spread.

Gallup has almost always had Bush up, and they had him up something like 13 in 2000. If they're the outlier, and they're the highest it gets, I'd look at the other polls. Not too many polls put bush at 49 or 50.

Thanks for the inspiration, Godfrey. I think you are right. I've decided to lock the Jack Daniels up and chill the champagne!!!

Thank God Clinton is on the stump for Kerry. I only pray he does for the Senator what he did for Gore, Bustamante, Gray Davis, Boles, and Reno.

Does anyone believe the gallup poll coming out of Florida? They have Bush up 8. What an outlier!

We used to ask around election time, What if that candidate was working for me? Is he/she doing a good job? Should I give her/him a raiseĶ or what? What if we asked that question today?

You have a (really big) company. Your most prominent employee is up for a performance evaluation. You shuffle the papers and look at his records. In his first nine months of employment, he took three months of vacation. Just in the past couple of years, he spent over 100 billion dollars trying to create a business partnership in the Middle East. Somehow, even though your company is in deep debt, that partnership has made his friends filthy rich. He cant explain where your money went, or how his friends got so rich; he doesnt even say hes sorry about the thousands of deaths among your employees. Although he broke every promise made during his hiring interview and blames his poor performance on others, he insists hes doing a good job. Is he interested in improving his performance? Nope, he even goes so far as to say that if he had it to do all over again he would do exactly the same thing.

HmmmĶ Lets see. Should we keep this employee around, or give someone else a try?

The Baloonist . . .
A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.

She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Democrat." "I am," replied the man. "How did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me."

The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Republican." "I am," replied the balloonist.?? "How did you know?" "Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you're going. You've risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but, somehow, now it's my fault."

FYI, Mark, the New Yorker had never endorsed anyone for President before, and they certainly would have never endorsed a right-winger.

Sorry for the off-topic remark and carry on.
