OH-02: Election Results
Posted by Bob BrighamRESULTS Hackett Schmidt
Absentees 1,629 1,964
UPDATE: (Bob) I'm at the Party, I'm getting results on IM.
56 precincts of 753 reporting
PAUL HACKETT 6,562 51%
JEAN SCHMIDT 6,276 49%
UPDATE (Bob) 8:40 There are about 100 volunteers and a fuckton of press at the Hackett Election Night event. The volunteers are hot and sweaty, but everyone seems really happy -- not anxious. I'm the only one in the room with results, but nobody is rushing up to ask me. People seem really satisfied with putting up a good fight, they know they did a helluva a great job.
UPDATE (Bob) 8:47 OK, now people are coming up and saying hi, but not asking for numbers. A Kossack and a great guy who was reading SSP even though he was taking the bar. Speaking of which, I'm at a table next to the bar so if you're part of netroots, come by and say hi when you get here. People seem really content after a job well done.
UPDATE (Bob) 8:51 Tim can't post, so I'm going to start posting his IMs as updates. MyDD has the county-by-county.
TIM: 175 of 753 precints, Hackett 51-49 Schimdt. Hackett 13,513-12,802
UPDATE (Bob) 9:02 Mother Jones is going to have an in-depth piece on this race next month -- keep your eyes open because they've been with us for days.
UPDATE (Bob) 9:06 from Tim
259 precincts reporting of 753 -- Paul Hackett 52.18% to 47.81%
UPDATE (Bob) 9:09 The DJ has arrived, now we're rocking down here. Tagaris is up on the 19th floor staffing the Swing State Project National Affairs desk with our rapid response team.
UPDATE (Tim) 9:13 305 precincts of 753 - 23,957 to 22,846 Hackett leads 51-49
UPDATE (Bob) 9:28 John Loyd from Philly and his buddy from the district, Mark Berghausen (whose two GOP parents voted for Hackett), say hi to ya'll. Lots of people coming by to say hi, people have come from all over. Hackett's no bullshit approach inspires.
UPDATE (Bob) 9:44 Things are turning against Hackett in the numbers, but nobody here seems to care.
UPDATE (Bob) 10:03 Great night to be Howard Dean -- the 50 state strategy is gold: fight in every district, in every state, in every state and things move. People are chanting, LET'S GO PAUL
UPDATE (Bob) 10:35 I'm hearing the "F" word from a whole lot of people. Lots of rumors of potential fraud, lots of sketchy stuff....
UPDATE (Bob) 10:46 I'm hearing all kinds of totally sketchy shit -- I need everyone who reads this to start researching, googling, posting....more to come.
UPDATE (Bob) 10:50
CULTURE
OF
CORRUPTION
UPDATE (Bob) 10:56 Damn, if we can do this well here we're going to open up a can of whoop ass in 2006. The backlash is brewing, fight everywhere, everyday. Be proud to be a Democrat. And fight every single day. Good job Paul, you showed the Democratic Party the way!

Interactive visual from the Enquirer. Number reported so far are Hamilton County Absentee. 10% spread a good thing. See CNN results from 2004 where the county went Republican 70-30.

In looking at the Enquirer page of election results here: http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050802/NEWS01/308020015
it shows a decrease of about 1.5% from the Hamilton County results and the total results. What gives?
Posted by: Steve in Vancouver USA at August 2, 2005 08:08 PM | Permalink | Edit Comment | Delete Comment
Not a clue, but we'll know more soon.
Posted by: Bob Brigham at August 2, 2005 08:09 PM | Permalink | Edit Comment | Delete Comment
Looks like that 1.5% is probably absentee ballots. Jerome at MyDD says that, according to his rough calculations, the absentee ballots from Hamilton Co and Brown Co show about a 13 point swing for Hackett, which is about what he needs to hit 50%.

Bob, thanks for the work tonight. I'm such a political junkie I blocked out the night so I'd have free time to just sit down here in Austin and press F5 all night.
Tell Tim Burnt Orange Report says hi (we talked last week on the phone) and some crazy Texan gave $10 to Hacket for our Honorary Texan page just before the polls closed just to get it in, putting us at an end total of $2285.

Bob thanks so much for doing this.
You and Tim have joined many people to some of the best work in politics the past few weeks. Congrats on all you've done!
Past conversations aside you guys are the best there is in the blogosphere.
Keep up the good work. I here the final will come in about 11 -- it'll be a fun couple of hours cause these results are bad news for them --- in a district like this 45 to 55 is very good news for us. She should be bringing in 70/30 to win close on absentees.
It just shows they had no absentee or no field program - but hackett had a real program.

I am from Brown County. This is very, very, conservative county. If I remember correctly, Bush was able to fool something like 70% of the voters in our county last year. These results from Brown county are very encouraging!

Which counties should break Republican?
Which counties should break Democrat?
TRADITIONALLY---to show contrast with this election?

Brown County now shows Hackett up 2279 to 1692 (57.30% to 42.54%).
Clermont County has Hackett down 1158-750 (Early ballots only - I assume those are absentees)
Latest Hamilton I have seen has Hackett down 2006 to 1717 (53.88% to 46.12 %)

according to THE MAJORITY REPORT caller that was just on: Schmitt has been campaigning at and near ballotting places all day even giving out items of value. Sounds like more of them Christian values being trampled on huh? Or are they Fristian values?

I heard that too. Jean Schmidt nail files one caller said - at the polls! Is that legal?

I'm not surprised she would do something like that. These are the same people who believe supporting unjust wars, the dealth penalty, and tax cuts for the rich are 'Christian' values.

I can't stand it!!! I was working in Clermont county for 3 days and I had to come home to Philly today. I'm going insane waiting! I know we've already "won" based on the fight we put up and the money we've made them spend. But I can't wait for the final results.
Having been there, I can't see how anyone would vote for that woman. If I was a single issue pro-life voter, I'd have stayed home today!

Isn't it a good thing that Paul Hackett is ahead this early? I mean, Schmidt isn't even leading.
Boy, I'll bet the Republicans are rethinking their "talking points" right now! They thought they had this election in the bag. Guess they are going to be campaigning hard in 2006.
The tide is turning folks! I can smell a Democrat majority in '06!

Unless vote patterns change in Clermont, it won't get close enough.
Based on the last numbers that Mr S posted from the BoE, Hackett will pick up another 600 net votes in Scioto County, leaving half of Clermont uncounted. He'd then need to net another 1400 votes in those precincts, which would mean winning 55-45. So unless Clermont is really half red and half blue, it's pretty much over.
Nonetheless, what a wild ride.

To correct my previous math with the new numbers, Hackett needs 870 votes, which works out to a 6.7% margin. He'd have to win 53.4-46.6 ... now there are counties where this sort of thing can happen, but they tend to be big counties that encompass both a city (or a big chunk of it) plus suburbs and exurbs. I don't think Clermont fits that description, but it's possible.

There were 87,156 votes for the Dem in 2004. Who are these ~37,000 Dems who didn't vote? Geez, they were all complaining that they'd been called over and over and over again to remind them to go vote today. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM?

We lost because this is one of the most conservative counties in the country, you see? It's Occam's Razor. We lost because the President could eat the heart of a baby on national Television and still win the disctrict because of the (R) next to his name on the ballot. Running a Democrat here is like running Nelson Mandela for governor of Alabama: It's not going to work out for you; not because of space aliens or haunted ballot machines, but just because they don't like the way he looks!

‘Why were there stickers on ballots in Clermont County, Ohio?’,
By Larisa Alexandrovna RAW STORY Staff
"Correction: Due to Editor error, the story as it appears is slightly different from the reporter’s original story. The reporter has corrected the final version which appears below.
"Serious new election tampering allegations have emerged from an Ohio county, where witnesses allege that stickers were placed on presidential election ballots, RAW STORY has learned.
"Several volunteer workers in the Ohio recount in Clermont County, Ohio have prepared affidavits alleging serious tampering, violations of state and federal law, and possible fraud. They name the Republican chief of Clermont’s Board of Elections and the head of the Clermont Democratic Party Priscilla O’Donnell as complicit in these acts.
"These volunteers, observing the recount on behalf of the Greens, Libertarians and Democrats, assert that during the Dec. 14, 2004 hand recount they noticed stickers covering the Kerry/Edwards oval, whereas the Bush/Cheney oval seemed to be “colored in. "

This is from Dick Bell at the Democracy Cell Project:
[10:04] Schmidt would appear to be running about 15 points behind Bush. Usually when you're talking about targeting seats, you look at races where, say, Bush won by 5 points or less. Opening it up to 15 means there are more vulnerable Republican seats to go after than there were in 2004.

SI,
[10:06] So like someone was saying earlier, there are districts where people who've never run before might have a shot. At the least, many more Republicans will be tied down, not able to go out on the road raising money for other Rs.

They must demand a recount at this point...we cannot let them get away with this...if true! We have to do something about getting these voting machines away from Diebold or whoever this place is using..they have to have a sight count...and watched. I have been through one of these in MA and know how you can watch or look at every ballot..so if Bob is looking in and reading, demand that they do this...

These results are great especially considering all Schmidt did was suck up to Bush the entire campaign. Every time she did an interview or ran a commercial, she always mentioned her love for Bush. She is clearly not an independent thinker, and is more interested in serving her party than the people in the district.
Rob Portman (who resigned) was very popular in this destrict. I remember how all of his campaign sings were yellow colored and had a blue line near the bottom. This past weekend I saw the exact same signs, only with Schmidt's name. Interesting.

Karen, if you can convince yourself of that, I'm not going to stop you. After all the hard work of the people here, you need something to celebrate. If you really think that's the case, I'm not about to shatter your illusions. Oh, and please keep challenging them. Challenge every seat with a Kos clone. Bring MoveOn.org and ACT into every district, and let Jane Fonda foot the bill for it. Just figure out what you're going to do with your life when after all that, we have President Brownback, 55 conservatives (not just Republicans) in the Senate, and Speaker DeLay running the country with seven Scalias on the Court to show the restraint that judges haven't shown in the last few decades.

My vote was counted via a punchcard, I guess that is the Diebold method. The thing I didn't like about the punch card that was used is how close together the holes were and since the names were listed as:
4 - Paul Hackett
5 - Jean Schmidt
I made sure that the numbers lined up by looking at the numbers on the card as it passed through the holes in the template.
There was enough play in the card that a punch could have gone to Jean Schmidt.
I am sure that a vote could have gone to Schmidt if the card was not fully inserted.
Since over 100,000 people voted, if the 'official' count is in favor of Schmidt by a few hundred.... well, I'll let you draw your own conclusion.

Did it hit too close to home? The woman you're supporting is not worth your time and it's pointless to mock people in here simply because they have the sense to call a spade a spade. There isn't ONE thing you can say that would make her more appealing to Democrats. Democrats didn't cross over to vote for her.
On the other hand, it has been shown tonight that not only does Hackett appeal to fellow Democrats but to Republicans too.

Actually Rove forgot one part of the rules. That part of the rule where the gov't official has to confirm that info he is disclosing is actually unclassified with the agency responsible. There are many intelligent Republicans out there ...and many of them voted for Paul tonight. We're going to have to keep engaging those intelligent Republicans in order to implement the Dean strategy.

Wow, Hackett actually did really well in the rural counties. Amazing. I guess they saw right through the methanol hype.

This just of the Cincy paper...
Report: Voting equipment
crashes in Clermont County
There is a report that voting equipment has crashed in Clermont County and that the remaining ballots will have to be counted by hand.
At 10:41 pm, Paul Hackett and Jean Schmidt were neck and neck in the vote count, with the Republican candidate slightly ahead. All results were in, except for Clermont County which was yet to report the tally from 91 precincts.

After everything that happened last year, and the strange delay in reporting Clermont County returns tonight, you STILL think it's tinfoil?
I don't know what to think yet. But leaping to the conclusion that the GOP are manipulating votes in a county that is overwhelmingly Republican... by - and here I am assuming what your position is - halting the count in Clermont to add a few thousand votes for Schmidt - strikes me as a bit of hysteria. I mean... look at the numbers, the good guys did good! Much better than I ever would have expected.
Wait, let me put this a slightly different way: It says some pretty dark shit about modern America that for all that they sport a giant erection for anything in camoflauge, we couldn't put an actual soldier over the top in this election just because he has a (D) next to his name; this even though the Republicans have been screwing people just like your average rural Ohioan for 5 years now without a rest and only tossing the occasional fag-baiting bone out as bread to compliment the Iraqi circus.
Now, do you think the little slice of America up for inspection in tonights election is that fucked up? If not, if you think your average American is fed up with unecessary social ills and blatantly illegal political shenanigans and a tremendous deficit and etc etc, then by all means: scream that this is Diebolds fault.
If however you agree with me that America is every bit as messed up as it would need to be to bend over and ask for more corruption and retarded policy initiatives from the dickweed thugs in the White House, then I think you may want to rethink your position here, because you seem to have two sets of theories warring with one another.

Guys, don't let the hardline conservatives get you down. Tonight is really a victory for Democrats; as others have said, this should have been a landslide for Republicans, which is obviously not the case. Schmidt is damaged goods, quite like DeLay (and to conservatives such as SI, like Frist). This is a bad omen for Republicans in 2006. Democrats are sharpening their strategy, and the Democratic party is becoming alive again. For the past five years, Democrats have been like deer caught in headlights, and now it's the Republicans' turn.

Paul won four of the county big time...is there
someone from Ohio that knows if these mean anything compared to the other three? He only lost Hamilton by 2%...isn't that one of the large districts? The only one he lost by a lot was
Warren.

More "tinfoil" from MyDD:
The reason the 91 precincts have not reported in Clermont County has to do with problems with the voting machines there. They are being counted by hand.

Warren county is the county that Hackett lost the most in. That's the county with the supposed "terrorist threat" in 2004 where they sealed off the vote counting from all reporters. Anyone know how the counting went there this time around?

here's news about the polling places being changed
CLEVELAND -- Fifteen polling places at Cleveland Municipal Schools were changed after the schools were “permanently or temporarily” closed this spring.
The new polling locations were posted at the old precincts, but the change made for some frustrated voters.
A Board of Elections spokeswoman says voter information postcards with new polling locations were mailed to affected voters last month.

hfiend, I'd suggest you do some homework on how much people with real money actually contribute. I do what I can with my (c)3 salary, but it's nowhere near what people like Michael Moore and Jane Fonda pour into campaigns and other left-wing loony causes.

...8,9,10 He's out! Yet again, both conservatives and liberals can celebrate. We can be happy that we have another vote in the House to implement a conservative agneda and you can celebrate that you gave it the old college try. Works for me!

A little refresher math on the Clermont County vote last year:
The ability of the Rovians to pull fresh GOP votes out of Hamilton and Clermont counties certainly challenged plausibility, and, in Clermont's case, almost defied mathematics.
Consider the fact that according to the Census Bureau, Clermont's population rose only 4.4% (about 7,800 souls) between 2000 and 2003, while reported GOP turnout increased by roughly 31% (about 14,600 votes) from 2000 to 2004. This in a county that only had about 122,000 registered voters last year, according to the Cincinatti Enquirer.
By now I think it should be obvious: The GOP machine's approach to voting in Ohio 2 is the same as its approach to the CAFTA vote on the floor of the House -- the count stays open until they get the result they want.

"The counting as resumed according to the papers"
I'm sure it has.
"We can be happy that we have another vote in the House to implement a conservative agneda"
Math isn't your strong suit, is it, SI. Unless Rep. Shit is more conservative than Rep. Portman, which hardly seems likely, then your side has exactly what it started the night with -- a crooked district and a right-wing congressman.
Congratufuckinglations.

Actually, SI Conservative highlights my rationale for believing that the voting irregularities bogeyman is probably deeply overstated as a reason for the continued GOP hegemony. I mean, look through his comments: he basically parrots the most absurdly preschool jabber that enters his ears classified "from reliable sources" without any attempt to analyze or justify it. His brain is like a Top 40 radio station, full of bubblegum pop and cheesy commercials for GOP(tm) ideology. The fact that much of what he says makes no sense goes blissfully by, totally un-noticed.
My concern, and belief, is that a disproportionate number of people as vapid as he is vote, because their particular kind of dingy credulity goes hand-in-hand with a kind of bemused sense of moral rightness and a firm belief that they are getting shafted by whoever they have decided their enemies are. Their minds are empty vessels for sloganeering, and the GOP has all the good slogans.

Now everyone in the 2nd Congressional District needs to keep Jean Schmidt as honest as a political party parrot can be. I no longer agree with either major political party and all I want is representation that I agree with on most issues. Paul Hackett was this person this time around. Provided that my views do not change and Hackett does not become a nutball, I would vote for him again.
As for everyone in the Second Congressional District and the USA - no matter if you candidate was Hackett or Schmidt, a Democrat or Republican let them know what you are thinking by writing/emailing/calling to them, constantly.
