OH: 18 of 18

Posted by DavidNYC

Pending any challenges, we have candidates running in 18 of 18 Ohio congressional districts. CQ did the hard work of going around to every relevant county office to collect these filings. What a cockamamie system Ohio has! The only person without a challenger is Democrat Tim Ryan in OH-17.

North Carolina is next (filing deadline 2/28). Barry Welsh says we have three seats unfilled (5,6 & 10), but the DCCC site says that we do indeed have a candidate in NC-10.

The following day, both Mississippi and Nebraska have their deadlines. In MS, we don't have challengers to either of the two GOP-held seats. However, in NE, we have challengers in all three seats.

After that, we've got a few empty spots in PA and quite a bunch in CA. You can see the complete list of filing deadlines here.

States with deadlines in the next 30 days (until the 22nd of March):

NC, MS, NE (all mentioned above), OR, PA, CA, ME, ID, IA, UT

Right now, there's open races in the 3 NC seats (filing has yet to produce a candidate in the 10th), the two MS seats, The 5th District of Pennsylvania (At the very least), at least three seats in CA (The 3rd, 21st, and 44th), The 4th District of Iowa, and the 3rd District of Utah.

There may be another uncontested seat.

But right now, we're at 86 for 87. In 2004, we contested 82 of those 87 seats.

The states up in the next month have 109 seats.

We filled 103 of those seats with a candidate in 2004.

If the 2004 numbers seem high, remember, they drop when you get to Georgia (4 uncontested in 04) or Florida (6 uncontested in 2004)

As for Georgia and Florida, I only have Young, Putnam, Deal, Norwood, and Gingrey down as unopposed. 33 for 38 is an improvement on 28 for 38, but I'm pretty sure that we can get candidates in the South.

Sure, the candidates might lose, but it would be an interesting sandbox to test ideas. Granted, it'd be a low-budget sandbox.

What about the issues in Strickland's district?

I'd imagine that Wilson has the resources to win as a write-in candidate in the primary if he can't make it onto the ballot.

I'm so pissed that NC is going to be the first to have 2 uncontested seats. Then again, we have a number of uncontested Dem seats as well.

Actually, I wouldn't be stunned if some gadflyish candidates showed up by the 28th.

But.. yeah.. it's getting close to the deadline. Nothing is in stone yet, in fact, McHenry hasn't even filed yet.

Anyways, here's the list from North Carolina.
