NH-Sen: Hotline Says Ayotte Will Run

Breaking:

NH AG Kelly Ayotte (R) will resign today in a run-up to a Senate bid; she should be putting out a press release shortly, a GOP strategist tells me. She is expected to announce her desire to run for retiring GOP Sen. Judd Gregg’s seat at a later date.

Ayotte, the state’s first female AG, will stay in her job until 7/17.

Of course, doing so would mean she’s going back on her pledge to Gov. John Lynch that she’d serve out a full term as Attorney General. Then again, any Dem who expects ambitious Republican office-holders to keep their word is sort of letting themselves get played for a fool, no?

  1. oh yeah Ronald Reagan quit midway through his first term to run for his second, right?  I mean you can’t hold a responsible office and run for another, can you?

Um, do I have that right?

  2. Cutting and running from your job. Palin’s abrupt resignation must of inspired her. Another slap in the face for John Lynch. But really she’s probably the best candidate the GOP could recruit. On the upside, maybe Paul Hodes will stop being the most boring candidate ever.

  3. Having a flesh and blood opponent should be a kick in the ass for him to actually get some decent money coming in. I think Hodes will still win in a cakewalk, but he needs to pick up the pace.

  4. I would think, just as a pure political strategy, it would be smarter to stay as AG, instead of looking like a job hopping opportunist and invite comparisons to Sarah Palin.

  5. While I think Lynch is a douche I can understand why.  In 2004 NH was a swing state so he probably wanted to get his independence on.  Of course, any good politician should know that you have to change with the times.  So he still gets blame for reapointing her.  We should primary his ass and maybe he’ll stop being such a douche.

  6. First of all the UNH poll was inaccurate with its sampling. Second, many many people in UNH have never even heard of Kelly Ayotte while Hodes is very well known.

  7. While I have no idea how she will perform as a candidate (considering she’s never run for anything before), her profile makes her a serious candidate for this seat. This is probably the best news the New Hampshire Republicans could have gotten other than Gregg deciding to run for re-election.

Hodes has got to step up the fundraising.
