  1. I just learned about Chris Daggett’s independent candidacy.  It seems to be fairly serious, relatively speaking.  I think that he can pull in some votes if he gets matching funding–but will it be from the left or the right?

I think that it’s probably good news for Corzine.  Daggett could take some of the truly-disaffected Democratic and Independent vote that would otherwise go to Christie.

Anyway, that’s what I’m watching this week.

  2. my sympathies. You’re probably going to have Palin almost full time in your states for the next couple years running for president.

Or maybe she could “pull a Chris Dodd” and actually move the family to Iowa?

  3. and it is now completely frozen.  Not the whole internet, just that page.  Right click works, I can click on things, but My map won’t zoom, won’t pan, and I can’t select a new district.  It was a really good map so I hope it’s not completely lost.  Oh, and I clicked on “Next unasigned” when it froze.  A message came up saying something like “No more unassigned, click thru something”, I closed that, and it froze.  Has this happened to anyone else and do you know how to fix it?

  4. I don’t remember whether this has been reporteed on SSP yet, but a Deval Patrick Committee e-mail tells me that Doug Rubin is stepping down as Patrick’s chief of staff and Arthur Bernard is stepping into said role.

  5. I’m going through all the races, state by state, and this is the first one to really excite me.  Not only was it very close in 2008, but Hedrick is a really good guy, and he has a professional looking website.

My first donation of the cycle.

  6. This is the old seat (PVI D+11) of Ellen Tauscher, finally confirmed to the State Dept.

Governor sets CD10 special election date

Sept 1st, it’s an open ballot primary. All the candidates of all the parties are on the same ballot.

If no one gets 50%, the top finishers will runoff on Nov. 3.

Doing some googling, it turns out there are six Democratic candidates (so far), and they held a debate already last week!

CA-10 Democratic Candidates Square Off in Antioch

Nice write-up, with nice photographs of the six Dem candidates.

Realistically, you got to assume Lt. Gov John Garamendi has a big leg up here.

  7. I had my most patriotic Independence Day ever.

First stop: the New York Public Library, where they had on display a Declaration of Independence written by Jefferson himself. After it was altered and approved by the Continental Congress, Jefferson wrote several copies of what he had submitted originally and underlined the portions where changes had been made. Only two of these are known to have survived. Aside from the thrill of seeing the handwritten document, it was interesting to see the paragraphs on slavery that had been stricken from the final version.

Also on display were one of the 25 or so Dunlap broadside printings of the Declaration, one of the original New York printings, a couple of newspaper printings, and a letter from Franklin to General Washington.

Second stop: a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge with my aunt and uncle, with beautiful views of Lady Liberty in the harbor.

Third stop: a short walk from my apartment on the Upper West Side to the Hudson to watch the fireworks. I usually don’t bother, but it was too convenient to pass up. I was out and back in an hour.

  8. first I went to the marquette city parade, where I shook hands with the great Bart Stupak and State Rep. Steve Lindberg.  Then we went to the International food fest, which is always my favorite part because not only is there so much diversity in the food, but all of the diversity in the people as well.  We stayed there all day and at about 10:00 we found a spot on the grass and watched the fireworks over the lake.
