DE-Sen: Harold & Kumar Go to New Castle

It’s on:

New Castle County Executive Chris Coons made it official today: He’s challenging Congressman Mike Castle for the open U.S. Senate seat long held by Vice President Joe Biden. […]

“People here in Delaware are hurting, and Congress has failed to deliver the change we voted for in 2008. I’m running to bring new energy and a new approach to Washington,” Coons said in a news release.

“Before I was elected in 2004, the county government was mired in scandal. I restored integrity and confidence in county government. I cut wasteful spending, helped businesses to create jobs, and made our communities safer. I want to take my strong track record of getting real results to the U.S. Senate because the people of Delaware deserve leadership that represents their values.”

  1. This will be a tough fight, but we have a guy who can win and ,from everything I have heard about him, it sounds like he would be a great Senator

  2. Can Coons run against Washington — while still also getting mileage out of running WITH the Democrats/Obama in a blue state?  I think it’s a needle that he can thread, if he’s careful.  My advice would be:

First, get a truck and be everywhere in Delaware, while Castle is stuck in DC.

Second, emphasize that the problem of Washington gridlock is intransigent old Republicans like Castle.  Remind Delaware that Castle will be a reliable vote for the Senate Republican leadership, who are far, far to the right of Delaware, in addition to being intransigent.

Third, get Obama & Biden — have them swoop in with the message that they’re trying to change Washington, but it’s an unfinished project — and what they really need is more Senators like Coons!

  3. This is definately winnable. Nobody thought we would take down Dole in 08, and we did.

This is an open seat where everything is possible. Go Coons!

  4. … there are dozens of races whose results turn out as expected. Castle is a de facto incumbent who won 61% of the vote last time. If Castle was the de jure incumbent, this would probably be ‘Safe GOP’ by the standards of other races.

I don’t see how there’s a realistic winnable road to victory if it didn’t happen in the last two election cycles. If “young guy who paints Castle as a vote for Republican leadership” had such a legitimate shot, why haven’t candidates in the past given Castle close elections using this strategy? Castle was old in 2008 and he was also a vote for the Republican leadership (albeit House), while home state Senator Biden was on the Presidential ticket in a pro-Dem climate. There would have been no better time to knock him off.
