CA-20: Costa Declares Victory

Another Dem save:

Democratic incumbent Jim Costa declared victory late Wednesday afternoon in his hotly contested race against Republican Andy Vidak in the 20th Congressional District.

“This has been a hard-fought campaign,” Costa told reporters outside his campaign headquarters in downtown Fresno.  “But it appears now that it’s over.”

Costa spoke after Fresno County released new results from thousands of absentee and provisional ballots that had not been counted on election night.

Those results wiped out Vidak’s 145-vote lead and vaulted Costa into a 1,200 vote lead in the 20th district.

Thousands of ballots remain to be counted in Fresno and Kern counties, but those are Costa strongholds.

  1. They couldn’t even knock off Costa while he was napping. And they were in the midst of a scorched earth campaign against Boxer. And they were especially out to destroy her in The Central Valley. Talk about FAIL!

  2. It’s amazing that Democrats could hang on in such a very large state and so well. Double digit routes in most statewide races, a gain in Assembly and no legislative losses and no Congressional losses. It’s too much for words.

  3. that while Obama may have gotten 60% of the vote in CA-20, this is made up of conservative Democrats who are rather socially conservative.  That’s how a whopping 72.2% (.pdf) from CA-20 voted FOR Prop. 8.

(In other words, if someone thinks someone should primary Costa from the left in 2012, running on a platform of supporting gay marriage, you’re going to be in for a rude awakening when the district soundly rejects that liberal.)
