TX-Gov – Perry open to possible secession for Texas (NOT a snark)

http://www.dailykos.com/story/…

QUESTION: What do you think about the idea of secession or sovereignty for your state?

PERRY: Oh, I think there’s a lot of different scenarios. Texas is a unique place. When we came into the Union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that.

My hope is that America, and Washington in particular, pays attention. We’ve got a great Union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it.

But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, who knows what might come out of that.

This man is seriously deranged.  He is getting dangerously close to treason.

  1. Saying he’s not advocating dissolving the Union, which makes him another sleazy politician; willing to say anything to get support from people.

Really strange that in 2009, America appears to be refighting the Civil War.

  2. I swear there’s some special provision relating to when Texas joined the Union that he’s confusing with an explicit right to succession.  I think it was something like Texas has the right to split into up to five states.  Maybe I’ll google for it later.

  3. From what i got from his statement he didnt say he was open to the idea but rather that Texas could do it if the state wanted to. Nevertheless, what a messed up thing for Perry to say. He basically acted like secession isnt a big deal, like its nothing bad. But wheres the criticism from the right? Unless i havent checked in the right places i havent seen it yet. If this were Deval Patrick saying that the Bay State could secede then the entire right would be outraged. They are when a leftist group wants their state to secede. The right is the same group of people who like to say theyre so patriotic and pro-American…well whats more unpatriotic and unAmerican then acting like your state seceding from the union isnt a bad thing?

And on the issue of those ‘Tea Parties’, I was watching Hannity’s new show and that rally in Atlanta wasnt even just an anti-tax rally. When the guest, on the show, would spew conservative talking points on foreign policy and, I believe, on national security the crowd would erupt in a cheer. I bet the libertarians who attended that rally were pissed.

  4. Quite enjoyed these comments by a History Prof at Texas A&M (Perry's alma mata):

A&M professor Walter L. Buenger is a fifth-generation Texan and author of a textbook on Texas’ last secession attempt. (The federal occupation lasted eight years after the Civil War.) “It was a mistake then, and it’s an even bigger mistake now,” Buenger said by phone from College Station, where he has taught almost since Perry was an Aggie yell leader. “And you can put this in the paper: To even bring it up shows a profound lack of patriotism,” Buenger said. The 1845 joint merger agreement with Congress didn’t give Texas an option clause. The idea of leaving “was settled long ago,” he said. “This is simple rabble-rousing and political posturing,” he said. “That’s all it is.  . . .  Our governor is now identifying himself with the far-right lunatic fringe.”
