New York Ready in Daves Redistricting

Johnny beat the annoucement that New York is ready, with a great map. (Nice going!)

I’ve also made a couple of improvements to the software, prompted by working with New York:

– Thinner block lines, so you can see the tiny blocks.

– The slow work of Assign Old CDs now happens when you click the button instead of on load. (It took about 4 minutes for NY on my not too slow machine.)

– Zoom: Scrollbar replaces slider.

Here’s a link.

Note also: I am looking at partisan data, but it will take some time.

Enjoy.

  1. It is really great, I enjoy playing with it quite a bit.

    I have a couple requests.

One, is it possible for you to include something in your program that would allow for the user to fill in either an entire county or the remaining unidentified tracts in a county for one district with one click?

Secondly, could you put California to the top of the list for future states?  The reason why I ask this is because California is by far the state for the largest Democratic gains in 2012, and I think it would be helpful if people to get started on it. It is also a state that is very difficult to work on without a tool like this.

    Thanks much again.

  2. I have lived in both New York City and Upstate, and I look forward to making districts on your app.

  3. How’s the political data coming? Are the roadblocks still mucking you up?

Also, did you ever come up with a highlighting function to highlight minority areas in places with big urban areas so its easier to maintain VRA standards?

  4. I am trying to create some majority-Hispanic districts in GA and I want to make sure that the Hispanics in these districts are eligible to vote. It’d be cool to look at VEP or VAP data if possible. Thanks for all the hard work Dave!

  5.  I have been waiting forever to redistrict it. I hope that even though California takes alot of time, you will get it on soon. I have a couple of questions: How soon do you think you will have Illinois on and how soon will any state have partisan data? Thanks again for getting on New York.

  6. First, thank you so much for this app.  And thanks for putting up with all of our junkie-link request for more, more, more!

Speaking of requests (lol), I have a couple:

    1. Could you make it so you can toggle between the old and new data?  It’s important to see the trends and ascertain potential movement over the next ten years.  I know here in Georgia, there are areas that were very white ten years ago, but have changed rapidly.

    2. Also, is it possible to add demographic percentages for census blocks?  Some areas have large concentrations of multiple racial/ethnic groups, but can be missed by just comparing white to black.
