Charlie Rangel to give up chair

NBC news reports that Charlie Rangel, chair of the powerful Ways and Means committee, will step down and the spot will be temporarily filled by Sander Levin of Michigan until a permanent replacement is found. This is one headache I am glad is over.

  1. But the next shoe to drop will be retirement. If he is no longer a powerful committee chairman, there’s no reason for him to remain in the House with ethical and possibly legal clouds over his head. If this report is true, I think 2010 is the end of the line for him.

  2. ref a random googled progressive blog – http://www.politicaltruthusa.c

Former Manhattan Borough President Virginia Fields is viewed as a possible successor in Congress. Vince Morgan a former assistant to Rangel is already in the race. Adam Clayton Powell IV is said to be interested in Rangel’s seat. State Senator Bill Perkins would be a formidable candidate. Assemblyman Danny O’Donnell could be formidable. Assemblyman Keith Wright is waiting for Rangel to step down.

Interestingly if Rangel steps down before July 1st, the Manhattan Democratic Party Chair would select Rangel’s successor as the Democratic candidate and there will be a special election with no primary. The Manhattan Dem Chair is Keith Wright, a close Rangel ally.

  3. I don’t think it’s appropriate how this and the Eric Massa retirement diary were both published as diaries. They’re each only two sentences long and could easily be discussed as comments on another thread since they’re so short. I worked really hard for hours on a Texas redistricting diary that has now been pushed down two spots because of these two-sentence diaries, which is kind of frustrating.
