The Great Swing State Project Predictions Contest: Results Are In!

Back in mid-October, most of you will recall that James and I launched a community predictions contest. We selected twelve races from all across the country – half of them top-tier, the other half more obscure – and asked SSPers to predict the outcomes. Well, we’ve finally compiled the results!

As we said at the outset, winners are determined by who made the closest predictions in the aggregate, across all dozen races. So, for example, if you predicted Corker by five in TN-Sen, you got two “points” added to your total score (he won by three). However, if you had picked Ford by five, you would have gotten eight points added to your score. (In other words, the race was Dem -5, but you said Dem +3, which is a difference of 8.)

If the math bores or confuses you, don’t worry. Just trust me and James. (After all, we majored in history and poli sci.) We tallied up the score in each race for each entrant – the folks with the lowest scores did the best. Without further ado, the winners (scores in parens):

Winner: Democraticavenger (50)
First Runner-Up: Tyler (53)
Second Runner-Up: Dcal (57)
Third Runner-Up: Craig (58)

Congratulations to you all! At some point, my sorry ass will send you some SSP schwag, but I can promise you that it will not come in time for the winter holidays. (Besides, I’ve already missed Diwali by over a month.) Please e-mail me if you are a winner and would like to (eventually) claim your prize.

If you’d like to see how your predictions stacked up against the rest of the community’s (we had 52 total entries), you can check out this PDF. (Legend: R = actual result; D = difference between guess and result; P = “points,” ie, the absolute value of the difference.)

Thanks to everyone for participating! We had a lot of fun, and we hope you did, too.

Hello SSP!

Well, hello there SSP! I just wanted to get a first diary up…I don’t have a ton to say, so I’ll just getout some quick bullet points (or just a list w/o bullet points, if i cant figure out the autoformatting).

1. Yay we won the house!!!!

2. AND THE SENATE!!!!!!!!!

3. I worked on the Jim Esch for Congress Campaign. We lost by 10 points, which was the closest margin for any DEM in NE in 12 years. We ran against a 4-term incumbent, and since we took NO PAC money ,we ran at a 3:1 money disadvantage. He will win in 2008, I am certain.

4. Rumor has it Russ is considering running for pres….I have wanted to work for him for a long time, starting when he lost 99-1 on that vote in October of ’01. Maybe I’ll send a resume and a cover letter…

Anyway, that is pretty much everything on my mind right now. I am getting on a plane in 15 hours, to take 11 days of well-earned vacation, and celebrate my birthday.

I love DKos, and hopefully this site (which seems to me to be like DKos, but for mostly elections only, not just politics in general) should be lots of fun. Plus, I have a sweet, extra low ID number, so maybe I will be famous here one day.  🙂

I Hope This Doesn’t Get Blocked at Work

Then again, maybe I ought to hope it does… this is gonna kill my ability to get any work done! I got a little more productive at work when DKos got banned by the company filters. On that front, maybe we could keep the profanity to a voluntary minimum? Profanity seems to be one of the factors that attract the attention of the filters.

More thoughts below the proverbial flip.

Man, how many times have I seen some new poll and wanted to get somebody’s reaction on it. Seeing no post about it on SSP, I’ll post about it in the comments of the latest post (even if its totally on a different subject). Yep, that was just today with the latest batch of Majority Watch polls! Now I will soon be able to announce stuff myself in a (potentially recommended) diary. That’s totally excellent, as SSP fits my niche better than the massive DKos or the agenda-heavy MyDD. I can talk about Scott Rasmussen, Charlie Cook, CQ, Scott Eliott, and Larry Sabato, and people will just know what I’m talking about. Yay. OK, time for bed. Sweet dreams of Nancy Johnson, Sue Kelly, Steve Chabot, and Chris “Count” Chocola leaving congress forever.

By what margin will Bob Shamansky win?
