Happy Halloween!

That image is a jack-o-lantern made by DailyKos community member spurdy. Definitely an image that's sure to bring fear to the hearts of Republicans everywhere. This pin from a Larry Grant supporter is almost as good.

I hope you have a good time tonight!

Man, so we did it - we raised $1.5 million on the netroots page, meaning we took in over $300K on Friday alone. Wow!

Anyhow, only two more of these open threads until election day. See any interesting, late-breaking fundraising reports? Let us know.

Weekly Open Thread: What Races Are You Interested In?

Posted by DavidNYC

Two weeks. Can you believe it? After all this waiting - just two more weeks.

Be sure to post your guesses in The Great Swing State Project Prediction Contest!

UPDATE: Mike Callaghan (WV-02), a candidate I've long had my eye on, has been added to the DCCC's emerging races list. Hopefully there's still enough time for this to make a difference. With a big enough wave, who knows? Maybe even Shelly Capito might get washed out.

Weekly Open Thread: What Races Are You Interested In?

Posted by DavidNYC

I hear there's an election coming up soon.

UPDATE: In an update to a story that Swing State Project first covered many months ago, Curt Weldon is now under federal investigation for trading his official influence for lucrative lobbying contract for his daughter. Check it out (via DailyKos). Ah, when bad things happen to bad people. Now Crazy Curt can spend the last month of the campaign answering questions about this. Finally, justice arrives.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Two new polls with contradictory results in NH-02:

Hodes led Bass 48 percent to 39 percent with the other 13 percent undecided in the Becker Institute Inc. poll taken Oct. 6-8.

...

An American Research Group poll had better news for Bass, showing him still out front, 48-42 percent, with 3 percent for Libertarian Ken Blevens and 7 percent undecided.

It's my birthday, so no blogging today for me. Feel free to use this as an open thread!

I will say this, though: we're going to see some exciting changes here at Swing State Project soon, including something fun next week that will hopefully get you all involved. I can't wait to get you guys in on this!

Posted by DavidNYC

The floor is yours.

P.S. If you come across any early fundraising reports, please let us know.

P.P.S. Surprise! North Korea detonates a nuclear device! Just as the media were in an all-out feedy frenzy over the House Republican cover-up of Mark Foley's predatory behavior, suddenly the ground shifts again towards nuclear proliferation issues. While this may aid the Republicans marginally in that it helps change the subject (for who knows how long) from the lose-lose Foley scandal to yet another discourse on scary people wanting to kill us. But really, I find it hard to see how this will be much of a net plus for the GOP. Did the failure to contain North Korea's nuclear program not happen under Bush's watch? Isn't this just another sign of Bush's weakness? (James L.)

Apart from FL-16, that is. Okay, you can talk about that one, too.

P.S. A new Massa internal poll (PDF) shows an extremely tight race: Kuhl 43, Massa 39. For Kuhl to be mired so far below 50 is a real sign of danger. Of course, Eric Massa is a netroots candidate (one of the first, in fact), and he still could use your support by the filing deadline tonight.

Speaking of which, I'm sure you saw that we blasted through our goal of 10,000 donors yesterday. And I'll tell you this: It sure is nice to be able to end the push a day early. But I also noticed that we're just about $25,000 away from a total of one million dollars raised overall. I'll be very excited when we hit that milestone!

UPDATE: The Swing State Project will be taking a break for Yom Kippur. We'll be back in action on Tuesday. See you then.

Bumped.

Sorry for the slowness today. I've been tying up some loose ends for the weekend, but I'll try to have some stuff up later tonight. In the meantime, have at it here. This was the week of a million polls, including tons that I didn't post here (although if you want to track the daily goings-on on the Senatorial side of things, do check out the revamped Electoral-Vote.com). Have there been any stories that have fallen through the cracks? What's going on in your neck of the woods?

In site-related news, DavidNYC will be back from his honeymoon on Sunday(-ish), so you can probably expect to see him back in full force with both guns blazing on the 25th. (This is my attempt to goad him into posting a lot so I can go back to my studies. Wink.)

You know the drill.

So after seeing Who Killed the Electric Car? last night (it was excellent), and watching An Inconvenient Truth twice this summer, I'm on the cusp of becoming a full-blown environmentalist. Or, at the very least, I want one of these.

PS: Obviously, Tuesday is a big day with primaries in WI, NY, AZ, RI, MD and several other states. I plan on posting a primary race round-up later tonight.

Weekly Open Thread: What Races Are You Interested In?

Posted by DavidNYC

It's Labor Day weekend - go have fun! But if your definition of fun involves talking about campaigns and elections, do it here.

P.S. Candidates in states (like NY, NH, etc.) which have primaries on Sept. 12th just filed their pre-primary fundraising reports yesterday. Paul Hodes pulled in $101K, while Charlie Bass took in $134K. Of course, Bass had about $50K from PACs while Hodes had just $10K. Nonetheless, this is yet another unimpressive showing for an endangered incumbent.

In cash-on-hand, Bass now leads $503K to $410K - Hodes spent about twice as much in the last reporting period. Given that he's a challenger with low name rec (and had been very thrifty until now), that makes sense to me. In any event, a less-than-$100K CoH means that Hodes still has 82% of what Bass has in the bank. That would still have put Hodes in the top ten last time. (Hopefully I'll have the chance to do another CoH competitiveness chart again soon.)

Needless to say, we've been pretty obsessed with the netroots races around here this week. But I'm told that there actually are other races going on in other parts of the country. What's tickling your fancy lately?

P.S. Check out this pictorial display of dedication. These envelopes currently adorn the dining room table of Kossack Mem in Sommerville. These are the sorts of follow-up requests you typically only get if you've already given to a candidate:

Awesome!

Weekly Open Thread: What Races Are You Interested In?

Posted by James L.

I'll be your Open Thread sherpa this week. We've had some pretty hot action in the past few days, considering that it's August: George Allen idiotically made his seemingly-safe Senate seat a ripe target again by astoundingly mocking the ethnic heritage of a Jim Webb videographer. Allen could barely contain his shit-eating grin when he heard that the DSCC was going to take a pass on funding Webb's media campaign two weeks ago, but two weeks can make or break campaigns if the gaffes are big enough. Allen knows he's in hot water and has made himself a likely target again. If the DSCC is at least halfway-savvy, they should be reallocating resources from the much less attractive Arizona Senate race into Virginia right about now.

But enough of that. What races have caught your eye lately? And how do you see November shaping up for the House and Senate race scene?

LAMONT!

Well, you know what's on my mind 24/7. How about yours? I hope you've all perfected your primary-day results-watching set-up: multiple computers, plasma screen feeds, plenty of beer nuts, etc. Me? I just do it the old-fashioned way: one laptop and a lot of heart.

Anyway, before I descend into even more unintelligible blathering, I just wanted to give you all notice that I'll be taking a short break from the Swing State Project--from now until Aug. 14--to take a vacation and entertain a guest from out of town. Furthermore, to make the timing even less-than-ideal, DavidNYC is taking a well-deserved vacation during this period, too. So, SSP will be left in the good hands of RBH for the time being. Treat him well, gentle readers.

I hope you all have a very great weekend and an absolutely rockin’ August 8th!

The last batch of campaign finance reports are due today. You can track electronic filings here. However, not all races file electronically (I think Senate campaigns are not required to), so some disclosures may not take place until after the weekend. In any event, hats off to James for tracking all the numbers, and thanks to all the commenters who've provided them.

I'm hunkered down in bar-study mode - the exam is July 25th & 26th - so I won't be blogging for a few weeks. The rest of the gang here at SSP will, of course, see you through. If you've got any fundraising info to report, please post it here.

Update (James L.): As noted in the comments, go vote in Barbara Boxer's PAC For A Change Senate Challengers poll. The candidate who nets the most votes will receive a fundraising appeal to Boxer's e-mail list. And if you've seen the PAC's Actblue page, you'll know that she has more than a few subscribers. This is a good chance to get some cash thrown towards your favorite candidate.

Also, it's your last chance to vote in Mark Warner's Forward Together PAC competition. 10 candidates are competing for a chance to receive a fundraiser hosted by Warner himself. Voting ends tomorrow.

This weekend, the title question is probably unnecessary - CA-50 and MT-Sen are on everyone's minds. But if you've got anything else going on - perhaps a little Iowa? - let us know.

Also, a few site news notes. First, as you may have noticed, authors' names are now automatically linked to their e-mail addresses. So if you want to contact me, James or RBH, just click our names right below the headline of any post.

Second, we've made it easier to navigate to older stories. When you reach the bottom of the page, you will now see a link to "Next Page »". Clicking that will bring you to the previous set of posts. You can keep navigating back that way at for least 10 pages worth of material.

Finally, you'll notice that the last link at the bottom of every post says "Technorati". This link will take you to a page on the blog search engine Technorati where you can see if other blogs have linked to (and are discussing) the post in question. For example, a number of blogs linked to yesterday's post about CA-50 GOTV efforts, which is definitely something I like to see. Anyhow, it's a fun feature you can play around with.

P.S. It's also looking like another new contributing editor may join us here soon. Stay tuned!

NE & WV Election Results Open Thread

Posted by DavidNYC

Polls just closed a few minutes ago in West Virginia. They are still open for a while yet in Nebraska - until 9pm Eastern time (8pm local time in the eastern part of the state, 7pm in the western half). Live results are here:

Nebraska

WV-Sen (GOP) | WV-02 (Dem) | All Races

The main races in Nebraska are the GOP senate primary (the winner gets to challenge Sen. Ben Nelson) and the GOP gubernatorial primary (a race with unusual dynamics - see here for more). In West Virginia, the GOP is deciding who gets to take on Robert Byrd (it'll probably be the unstable self-funder John Raese), and of course the Dems are picking a candidate to challenge Shelley Capito (as you know, I'm rooting for Mike Callaghan).

UPDATE: Hotline is calling it for Heineman. This is the best outcome we could hope for, for the reasons Mark lays out in comments here.

UPDATE (1:40 a.m.): Wow! Awesome! Mike wins! I just got done doing a spreadsheet projecting likely turnout in the remaining counties when I got an e-mail from someone affiliated with the campaign telling me the good news. (He also assures me that the one remaining county, Upshur, can't bring in enough votes to change the outcome.) This is just great! I admit, I was feeling down in the dumps about this one after I saw Hunt winning so many counties, so the feeling of joy and relief is tremendous. Go Mike!

I've got Busby, Busby on my mind. And you?

UPDATE: MoveOn is organizing virtual phonebanking for Busby. This is always an excellent, fun way for out-of-district folks to get involved. MoveOn figures it should only take an hour to make 15 calls (which is all they're asking for). Click here to participate.

UPDATE: Another update, this time from Brandon Hall, Busby's campaign manager, in an e-mail:

Overwhelming turnout today. The district is buzzing with Busby supporters.

We've already had over 300 volunteers show up for door knocking and phone banking. That's almost 100 more volunteers than had signed up. We're rushing to print more doorhangers, because at this rate we'll run out on Monday - which means we'll have dropped 52,000 doorhangers by then.

One quick note: I'm a little worried to see that the North Dakota Republicans have managed to find a strong challenger to Earl Pomeroy in ND-AL. It troubles me because the GOP is making so few attempts to play offense this year (the only ones I can think of are OH-06 and SC-05), so I think they wouldn't bother targeting this race unless they had a strong reason for feeling good about it. What do you think?

Well, that damn test is done. Let me tell you this: The BarBri review materials seriously suck. Not only are they poorly written and contain inconsistencies, but the practice test questions bear very little relationship to what you actually see on the real test. Grr. At least it's over.

On to better thoughts: What races look good to you? I'm very intrigued by the situation in CA-24. I can't wait to see what happens there.

UPDATE: Check this out from Kathy Harris:

"While there has been much speculation in recent days concerning my campaign, and our party faces challenges in this midterm election, I am confident with your dedication and commitment, we shall be victorious in November," she said.

However, her statement was vague, not saying whether Harris thought she would be victorious. Rather, it said she would "prayerfully prepare with my family, friends and advisers to finalize the strategy for a major announcement next week concerning my candidacy for the U.S. Senate."

This is one of the wimpiest statements I've ever seen from a campaign. Prayerfully prepare? Man, there is almost no way she isn't quitting.

This week, I've been thinking about some of the House races where Dems are going to have to play some defense: GA-03 and -12 (DeLay-style redistricting), IA-03 (Boswell in poor health), TX-17 (Chet Edwards, district went 70-30 Bush, Edwards always wins by small margins), LA-03 (general NO craziness), and possibly OH-06 (Strickland leaving, district tilts slightly GOP). I don't mean to say I'm feeling pessimistic - just cautious. How about you?

I see that a new (big) name has jumped into the AZ-08 Dem primary (this is the race to replace outgoing Republican Rep. Jim Kolbe): TV anchor Patty Weiss, who is apparently well-known in the district. While there are a lot of candidates running, Weiss's entry primarily sets up a showdown between her and state Sen. Gabrielle Giffords, the other major challenger. (Weiss even went so far as to pay for a poll running her & Giffords's name against the main Republican challenger, Randy Graf.)

Anyhow, what else is going on? New announcements, dropouts, what have you?

Weekly Open Thread: What Races Are You Interested In?

With the New Year upon us, new announcements and developments should be picking up pace. Kentucky's filing deadline is Jan. 31, so we'll know by then (if not sooner) if Ken Lucas is going to run again, and whether anyone else will jump into the KY-03 race. What's going on in your corner of the political world?

So, what's the haps? We're about the enter the slow zone, when junkies like us start fiending a fix. I have a feeling, though, that if you can deal with a few weeks of holiday-time withdrawal, the start of the year should bring us all kinds of new announcements.

Might as well get this one cranked up. What's going on in your favorite (or least-favorite) races?

P.S. Anything been brewing in Missouri lately regarding that stem cell ballot initiative?

I'm in the thick of final exams, so updates to the site might not be as plentiful as usual. On the other hand, there's no better way to procrastinate than by blogging, so maybe I'll churn out a storm.

Couple of resources you should check out if you haven't seen `em yet. First, this section of the DCCC's website lists all candidates who've filed to run for a House seat. The other is this page, compiled by staffers for Barry Welsh, a Democratic candidate running in IN-06. Welsh's site goes one step beyond the DCCC's and lists candidates who have not yet filed. You can also download it in Excel format to play around with it.

Anyhow, what's news in the races you're following?
