Republican Rep. John Doolittle, who is under investigation in a congressional lobbying scandal, plans to announce Thursday that he’ll retire from Congress at the end of his current term, according to a Republican official who spoke with Doolittle.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity pending a public announcement in Doolittle’s Northern California district.

…to make sure Charlie Brown has a nice amount of cash-on-hand so that he can take on whoever emerges from the June primary.
Still, bad news.
What’s the PVI of the district?
….most of us were just as glum when Bob Ney dropped out in OH-18 in the summer of 2006, but Zack Space ended up beating Joy Padgett by more than 20 points anyway. With luck, Doolittle will have a replacement just as lame as Ney’s replacement proved to be.
By my count, Doolittle makes 21 retirements (not including Bobby Jindal). Last time, it was 20 Republican retirements and 10 Democrats. The weird part is the string of early retirements: Denny Hastert, Trent Lott and Roger Wicker. Also of note, no retirements in Texas (and the filing deadline has passed) and so far none in Florida.
