MS-01: Have You Given to Travis Childers Yet?

We had a good haul yesterday in our efforts to “max out” to Travis Childers: twelve donations, $656 raised. That puts us about a quarter of the way toward our $2,300 goal.

What I’d like to see SSP do today is increase our number of donors by half – so, six more contributions by the end of the day. I usually prefer donor goals rather than dollar goals, but with the run-off less than three weeks away, it’s really the almighty dollar (rather than building up donor lists) that matters most.

But for today, at least, let’s focus on donations, not total amounts raised. After all, if Childers wins next month, he’ll still have a fierce race on his hands come November – and a big list of small donors will be invaluable. So please consider contributing today, no matter the size. The DCCC is stepping up, and so that means we need to put our money where are mouths are, too.

Update (Trent): Perhaps we underestimated y’all; we’ve already met today’s fundraising goal and it’s not even lunchtime. We’ve now raised over $900 from 18 folks; let’s try to make it to $1000 by day’s end. Every little bit helps get us closer to a Democratic majority in Mississippi’s congressional delegation (how sweet that would be!).

Update (Trent): Once again we’ve cleared the bar, having raised over $1000 for Travis Childers in little more than a day. Let’s all give ourselves a pat on the back, but we’ve got a ways to go before reaching our ultimate goal of $2300, the equivalent of one maxed-out contribution.

  1. Some more about MS-01

Travis Childers close win here in the runoff for Roger Wickers old seat has been widely noted as evidence of Republican weakness in the coming elections.  The race is now headed for a runoff on May 13.

A win here would really add to the narrative of a democratic resurgence in 08.  MS-01 is home to the University of Mississippi. Ole Miss is alma mater of Senator Cochran, former Senator Lott and now Wicker as well as this year’s commmencement speaker Fox News’ Shepard Smith.  The University is also scheduled to host the first presidential debate in September.  A win in the runoff on May 13 will be a blow to the core of the Republican power structure and will be a good talking point for the press from around the world that will assemble here in September for the first Presidential Debate.  The upcoming Senate race between Wicker and former Democratic Governer Ronnie Musgrove would also benefit from momentum generated on the Democatic side.

At a debate between Childers and his Republican opponent Davis last week, Childers was clearly conservative and emphasizing that in this district.  His antiwar stance was strong and his populism stood in clear contrast to the party-line republican talking points of his opponent Davis.  Davis was openly booed when he was questioned about the sleazy attack adds funded by the RNC and responded that he had nothing to do with them.

    Donate to the Childers campaign

  2. If we win here, then we know there will be nothing holding us back from Destroying Republicans in the US House and US Senate on election day.

This is an R+10 District.  Travis Childers was outspent two to one by Davis.  DCCC was outspent two to one by the NRCC.

How are people like Jim Himes going to have any trouble at all in places like a D+5 district (CT-04) where we’re only being outfundraised marginally?  There is going to be a huge wave in 2008.  And I’m going to bump my prediction by 5 seats if Cazayoux and Childers win.  From 20-30 to 25-35.

  3. a quick diary on the fundraising effort over at Kos; hopefully that’ll get us some more eyeballs and some more $$$ (at least in the next 45 minutes before it scrolls off into oblivion).

  4. I have a feeling that JtM’s comment about Jim Himes in CT 04 displays a bit of ‘irrational exuberence’.  Diane Farrel ‘should’ also have beaten Shays in ’06–good candidate, solid funding, Dem anti-war district, but she fell short.  It wasn’t all that close.  A family member was highly involved in the campaign and was sure she would win.  It seems that voters in ’04 avert their eyes from his warmongering and prefer to look at what they consider more enlightened votes.  There are always incumbents re-elected in ‘alien’ districts.  We did knock off old college pal of mine, Rob Simmons, in CT 02 (by less than 100 votes!), but just couldn’t pull it off in 04.

There’s no one who would like to purge the last Rebub Congressman from New England more than I, but Shays is really dug in.
