Here’s the damage:
Cmtee | Receipts | Spent | CoH |
---|---|---|---|
DCCC | $5.02M | $4.06M | $45.27M |
NRCC | $4.25M | $4.69M | $6.73M |
That April fundraising gap is actually not too shabby for Republicans, but one has to wonder if the GOP’s backbreaking loss in Mississippi last week will deflate their fundraising appeal in the months to come.
…it looks like the damage has already been done. That CoH advantage is frightening and isn’t likely to get smaller. As you pointed out it may grow larger.
The May, and then June, numbers are going to be when we see if the apocalypse has arrived for the NRCC.
But the 7.5:1 COH advantage is always nice.

Obama leads by the same figure. This one should be in the bag before too long.
As the saying goes, you can’t trade baskets when you are down by 10 points in the fourth quarter. That’s the best that anybody can say about the NRCC.
1. They actually lost $400 K from their cash on hand; Democrats increased by $1 million.
2. They lost that seat in MS and (if anybody’s counting) two earlier seats in LA and IL. Losing ground and losing seats is a lethal proposition.
3. The field continues to expand exponentially. If R+6 is the boundary, Republicans are defending 78 seats (excluding GA). R+10 adds 34 more for as total of 112. This ought to make the Republicans dizzy because some other seats like Alaska At Large are clearly in play. Not that 112 seats are in play but they are potentially in play.
4. The fate of Vito Fossella was really a deadly shot to the NRCC. Why contribute to the community till. At the whiff of scandal, Boehner et. al. will be leading the pack calling for your resignation/retirement. They don’t have your back. Why does this matter? The biggest remaining asset the Republicans have are the cash balances of their representatives in Congress. The NRCC is not a rainy day fund. Representatives are better off by far piling up the money for their own rainy day. If Fossella had $1 million in the bank (instead of $248 K), he’d probably still be running.
This is too sweet. We continued to expand the divide even after we outspent them 3-2 in these special elections. Then again, some of that spending in MS-01 happened in May.
