Blech. This can’t be good, a week before the state DFL convention.
A week before Minnesota DFLers endorse a U.S. Senate candidate, behind-the-scenes rumblings about a satirical Playboy magazine article written by candidate Al Franken eight years ago have broken into the open.
Four of the state’s five Congresspeople are quoted or mentioned as having concerns.
Obviously satire though so it probably blows over. If Jim Webb’s stories didn’t hurt him in Virginia I doubt this matters in Minnesota.
I’ve read a lot of Franken’s satire over the years. My favorite was the “Fighting Chickehawk” story with Cheney, Bush, Limbaugh, etc etc. Very funny.
I think this is not a big deal and will all blow over.
It does show how wimpy some Democrats are though. It also shows how we can be just as puritanical as the Republicans as well. A comedian and satirist writes something with a few F words and which talks about sex. Oh my! Can you imagine?!
The fact is is that we all think about sex. And the more educated you are the more you tend to have a healthy, unshameful sexlife. Especially people in government (Ben Franklin, Clinton, JFK, FDR, etc). Most people in this country read or watch porn (look at how big the industry is). Most Americans are way ahead of the politicians on this one. Perhaps it’s time that Democrats start treating their sexlives as healthy and natural. Leave the shame and the disgust to the Republicans.
