Dodd is retiring in order to persue his (probably futile) presidential bid. It’s a blue state in a presidential year, so I would consider it leaning Democratic at this point in time.
I have been impressed with Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro. If not her, then maybe Chris Larsen. If I’m not mistaken, both representate solidly Democratic districts, so we wouldn’t have to stress about protecting them (especially considering we need to defend Murphy and Courtney next year and try to beat Shays.
I see possible Republican challengers as Governor Jodi Rell and Congressmen Chris Shays.
I’m personally in the Obama camp. I don’t buy the argument that Hillary couldn’t win though–I just don’t think she’d be a great president.
The republicans have seized the south, it’s time for us to cement our forces in New England. Sen Sununu is up in `08 after nearly beating Jean Shaheen using tactics that led to arrests in 2006. with New Hampshire wild swing left, the fact that it will be a presidential year, with republicanism not exactly the soup de jour. in new England and so immensely popular there isn’t a word to describe it governor John Lynch running for reelection Sununu’s in hot water. As long as the dem.’s throw a strong candidate in (Shaheen or a popular state senator) this could easily work. In Maine Sen collins is somewhat vulnerable if the right candidate decides to run, in this case, congressman tom allen who has expressed interest. It’s a blue state, but collins and Snowe are both moderate republicans. Snowe’s safe no matter what happens, being even more popular than lynch. In 2012 if she runs again, Snowe could kill a man, run for reelection in jail a pull out a 52-47 victory, (higher if it was a jogger, or a guy from New Hampshire). Collins while popular, is no where near that level and could be vulnerable to Allen. Some may say Baldacci would work too, but no. he barely won a four-way race with a far-right republican, moderate independent and a green party member. Baldacci’s a lame duck, he doesn’t have a future in Maine politics past this term, still with the congressman and senators.
John Larson represents the 1st District and Chris Murphy just beat Nancy Johnson in the 5th, but I am not aware of a Chris Larsen.
These are three races I am now very worried about holding. Its interesting that DC’s Political Report, which makes political predictions and displays polling, already shows us losing these three seats and not picking up any other House seats. This is especially concerning because in 2002 and 2004 it had us picking up seats in both the House and Senate, when in fact we did much worse.
