  1. What a gift!

This is now officially a Republican war with 91% of Republicans voting for the surge and 99% of Democrats voting against it.  Considering that for the combined House/Senate 97% of Republicans voted to go to war vs. 42% of Democrats, the case is made.

With a few exceptions (Phil English, Ric Keller, Mark Kirk, James Walsh), the GOPers opposing the surge were not in political trouble but more than 20 of them who voted for it were already teetering on the edge of defeat.  People like Chris Shays, Tom Reynolds, Mike Ferguson, Heather Wilson, Dave Reichert, Rick Renzi, Deb Pryce, Steve Chabot, Jean Schmidt, John Doolittle, Thelma Drake, Frank Wolf, and Scott Garrett.

    Oh, happy day.

  2. I’m interested in the recent Turkmenistan presidential elections. I really can’t stand when elections seem to have been stolen….

  3. I have a hunch who is gonna run against John Hall in ’08.  Freshman Assemblyman Greg Ball trounced the incumbent Republican in the primary then handily won the general in November.  All indications are that he is a great campaigner; he’s also smart in that he’s attached himself to Spitzer’s reform express, getting booed off the floor of the Assembly last week after proclaiming that NY has the most dysfunctional legislature in the country.

Granted, this is just speculation on my part, but Google “John Hall” and take a look on the right side of the screen under the Sponsored Links section.  Coincidence?  I think not.

  4. A Republican has retired, and the open primary for the seat will be held on 10 March.  More on this race and my candidate of choice soon.

  5. The Democrats might have been able to encourage Elizabeth Dole to retire in 2008.

Instead today Elizabeth Dole acknowledged recent difficulties but stated whe would run for re-election and one of the reasons she stated was the lack of a viable Democratic foe.

    Penalty Team Blue.

  6. Any body but Republican Shelley Moore Capito. My list for candidates to beat her: State Sen. John Unger, a big Democratic winner in 2006 against a well-funded Republican challenger in a very red Berkeley County; Mike Callaghan in a re-match; FDL’s Christy Hardin Smith moves to WV-02 and runs away in a landslide (a guy can dream she’ll run can’t he?).
