OR-Sen: Merkley in a Tight Race With Smith

The Feldman Group for the DSCC (5/12-16, likely voters):

Jeff Merkley (D): 42

Gordon Smith (R-inc): 45

Undecided: 14

(MoE: ±3.5%)

The poll also shows Gordon Smith with a remarkably high negative job approval rating: 29% positive, 55% negative.

Looks like this one is shaping up to be a real race.

  1. Rasmussen had Merkley down 4 points, only 1 point off this poll.  Usually internal polls inflate their candidate’s numbers.

  2. Wow, those are horrible numbers.  Bush actually has a 6 point higher positive rating in Oregon than Smith (although his negatives are 8 points higher).

That’s crazy.  Smith is in real trouble here.

  3. And this poll doesn’t have any potential post primary bounce either. It wouldn’t take much of a bounce to give Merkley a lead, albeit a tiny, tiny one.
