When we last checked in with Louisiana state Sen. Don Cravins, Jr., he said he was “99.9% in” the race against GOP Rep. Charles Boustany.
Today, he cranked it up to 100%. As Ryan notes in the diaries, Cravins sent out a press release today saying that he’ll challenge Boustany for his R+7.4 seat:
The people of Louisiana are ready for a change and deserve representation that is line with their values. I am running for Congress because we need a leader who will work to find solutions to the hard times we face right now, like the skyrocketing cost of gas, groceries, and health care. I promise to bring my record of effective leadership and my strong faith and Louisiana values to Congress.
With the entry of Cravins, Democrats have done the remarkable in putting most of Louisiana in play this fall. Democrats are still trying to recruit a challenger for Rodney Alexander in LA-05, and if they succeed, it will be a full-court press outside of the impossibly red LA-01.
Do you guys think the DCCC really pushed to get Cravins in the race to appease the African-American population in Louisiana who always get passed up for white candidates who have a better shot of winning? Are they possibly just trying to keep that one guy out of the LA-6 race so Cazayoux can cruise to re-election? Let’s not have this spiral into anything negative, I’m just curious to see what people think.
Regardless, Cravins is still a great recruit and while we probably won’t win, this just makes Landrieu even that much more safe and gives the NRCC another seat to save if they can.
the possibility of holding 6/7 in LA, 3/4 in MS, 3/7 in AL, and 3/4 in AR. Seems like the only places we’re having trouble with in the South are SC, GA, and AL.

I thought I’d post the story in this thread since it is the result of a Louisiana legal case. A man convicted of rape (did not kill anyone) of a child appealed his death sentence at the U.S. Supreme Court and won. In a 5-4 decision the Supreme Court held that a death penalty for less than murder is unconstitutional.
I will never defend a child rapist, this guy will get the life sentence he deserves. But anything that chips away at the death penalty is good news in my view. This outdated and uncivilized form of punishment isn’t fit for a modern democracy like the United States.
It is cases like this that highlight the stakes of the Presidential race. We are one vote away from death penalty expansion, one vote away from overturning of Roe V. Wade, and one vote away from allowing foreign citizens to be locked up indefinately with no legal recourse.
