DCCC Unveils Fourth Round of Red to Blue Candidates

Here’s the list:

LA-07: Don Cravins

NV-02: Jill Derby

OH-02: Vic Wulsin

PA-03: Kathy Dahlkemper

VA-05: Tom Periello

VA-10: Judy Feder

MO-09: Winner of the August 5th primary

By and large, the DCCC is pressing into some very red turf with this round, showing even more aggressiveness. The full Red to Blue list to date can be found here.

  1. Last time I mentioned this race, I was criticized for not knowing the district, which I certainly know better than anyone on this site. Now polls are showing the Dem behind. Let’s sustain our incumbents and then work on the long-shots.

  2. You never push too hard into enemy terrotory without defending what you have. They need to shore up some incumbents and consolidate what we’re likely to turn red to blue. They should wait until October before they push this deep.

  3. i think aggressiveness at this point, if you have the money, makes a lot of sense.  the dccc is testing maybe 50-75 seats to see where they can find weakness.  they will sustain the push in places where they find it.

the gop doesn’t have the money to do that and is circling the wagons to limit the damage.

as for shoring up our incumbents – there are only about 5 democratic incumbents that could lose this cycle so that seems like a rather small job.

  4. Never thought I’d see those 2 in the Red to Blue list (emerging yes, but the list? No.)

Bout time on OH-2, shoulda been on the list a cycle or two ago.

  5. Any seat that is remotely competitive should be challenged.  If the polls are still against us in cetain races come October, then the DCCC should pull out then.

This is a long term process.  Even if we do not win a seat this year, if we can cast some doubt in voters’ minds on entrenched GOP incumbents now, they could become top targets down the line.  Or they could decide to retire in 2010 or 2012 rather than fighting for their seats, creating an open seat that is a lot easier to pick up later.

  6. Here is a comparison of PA-03 and PA-15:

    PVI:

    PA-03: R+2

    PA-15: D+2

Cash Power Index (COH vs. GOP candiate)

    PA-03: 16%

    PA-15: 52%

    Total raised by Dem candidate:

    PA-03: $313K

    PA-15: $538K

    2006 Results:

    PA-03: 54R-42D (D candidate outspent 6-1)

    PA-15: 54R-43D (D candidate outspent 14-1)

Sam Bennett has been a surprisingly strong candidate in PA-15.  This is the premier race in Pennsylvania right now, in my opinion.
