Since I had so much fun last time, I figure it’s high time for another music-related open thread.
Here’s what’s been in my CD player this week. As you can tell, I’ve been on a real power pop kick lately:
Big Star – #1 Record/Radio City (1972/1974, Ardent; r: 1992, Stax)
Cheap Trick – Rockford (2006, Big3) [Surprisingly, the best CT record since Heaven Tonight. This flat-out rocks.]
Bob Dylan – Bringing It All Back Home (1965, Columbia; r: 2003, Sony)
The Flamin Groovies – Shake Some Action (1976, Aim; r: 2005, DBK)
Mudhoney – Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles (1990, Sub Pop)
The Posies – Frosting on the Beater (1993, DGC)
Screaming Trees – Ocean of Confusion: 1989-1996 (2005, Epic)
Sloan – Never Hear The End Of It (2006, Murder/Sony)
What have you been listening to lately? And is anyone else as excited as I am about Trent Reznor’s upcoming Orwellian dystopia, Year Zero?
straight outta lynwood baby! it’s time to polkarama!
Mainly I’ve been listening to playlists on my ipod, so no particular albums are standing out, but I have been playing a lot of Slade, Phyllis Dillon and Susan Cadogan. I’ve also been listening to a ton of really danceable 60’s soul, because there’s nothing better than listening to dance music while having to sit/stand very still on the train. ;P
I think I need to start listening to pan flute and crashing waves in the morning. Perhaps it would make me hate my fellow commuters slightly less…
Thanks a lot for getting me CDs that rocked so hard my stereo couldn’t handle it and just quit working rather than disgrace Paul Weller’s legacy.
Very obscure artist, but fantastic nonetheless. Many of his songs have a liberal political bent, including his signature tune “Ordinary Joe.” I highly recommend checking out his music.
I have it mixing my Kasey Chambers, Dixie Chicks, and Patti Scialfa stations.
Bob Dylan – Bringing It All Back Home – My favorite Dylan album!
For some reason my iTunes is really obsessed with “Stankonia” tonight, and also “All Hail West Texas” by the Mountain Goats. MGs are highly, highly recommended.
If you haven’t heard the song “Parade” by Pretty Girls Make Graves, you really ought to. It’s about service-sector labor unrest, and should be a union campaign song. Relatedly, in the PGMG case I found “Advisory Committee,” by Mirah.
I use my computer much more than I use actual CDs lately, especially since (sigh) my car stereo was stolen. It makes for a tedious two hours from DC to Pennsylvania.
Sé (pronounced “shay” it means “six”) by Lunasa
“Hush” by Pauline Scanlon
“Evening Comes Early” by John Doyle
“The Crossing” by Tim O’Brien and some of the best Irish and bluegrass players on the planet
“1000 Kisses” by Patty Griffen
Got to see Lunasa’s final gig for this tour –awesome.
