LA-5: DCCC going after Alexander

From the Monroe News Star:

State Rep. Rick Gallot said Thursday that he will wait until after the current legislative session to decide whether to challenge incumbent 5th District U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander in the fall election.

Gallot, D-Ruston, is being recruited to run against the three-term Republican congressman by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

…Gallot, a two-term state representative, has been a floor leader for Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal as chairman of the House and Governmental Affairs Committee. He helped shepherd Jindal’s ethics agenda through the Legislature during a special legislative session earlier this year.

Ironically, Gallot said he recommended Alexander to the party as a candidate in 2002, when Alexander was still a Democrat.

“I still consider Rodney a friend, but we obviously have some different views on issues,” Gallot said. “He’s been a consistent supporter of the (Iraq) War and President Bush’s policies.”

  1. Payback for the stab in the back.

I forgive Alexander for switching parties. I welcome Repubs who become Democrats. But this sneaky creep waited until the last hour of the last day for candidates to file, and after having told the Democrats that he was running as a Democrat, switched to file as a Repub when it was far too late for the Democrats to find a real solid Democrat to run, leaving our line effectively blank. He acted the way a person acts when he’s ashamed of what he’s doing, acted like a criminal in the night, and he can live in shame for the rest of his miserable little career.

Also: This will put a strong Democratic challenger in every Louisiana House district except LA-01, the white-flight suburbs of New Orleans, recently represented by Gov Bobby Jindal, and by Sen David Vitter himself. (Well, O.K., LA-02, currently held by Dollar Bill Jefferson remains to be determined.) So now it looks like we could have a strong Democrat on the ballot in six of the seven House districts to help boost Democratic turnout in support of Mary Landrieu’s re-election. That could even help Barack Obama’s efforts to win the state’s nine EVs. A perfecta.
