Who Are Illinois Senate Candidates 1-6?

From the FBI we learn about 6 unnamed Senate candidates.  But who are they?

Senate Candidate 1: The favorite of Change to Win (labor).  This candidate is a woman, but took her name out of consideration.  Apparently the only thing she promised Blago was her appreciation.

Senate Candidate 2: Ben Smith at Politico figures it’s Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Senate Candidate 3: Only mentioned in passing as a comparison to Senate Candidate 3.

Senate Candidate 4: A Deputy Governor in Illinois who could be counted on the resign the seat and let Blago take it over if he (Blago) was impeached.  From a Dec. 1 press release from this year we learn there are 3 Deputy Governors of Illinois: Dean Martinez, Bob Greenlee, and Louanner Peters.

Senate Candidate 5: Promised to raise $500,000 to Blago’s re-election campaign.  This candidate is male.  Ben Smith seems to lean towards State Senate President Emil Jones rather than Rep. Jesse Jackson.

Senate Candidate 6: A wealthy person from Illinois.  According to Blago’s advisor, it would be hard to appoint this person to the seat.

  2. I also read that Blago was considering approaching Warren Buffett as Obama’s successor if they came to some form of financial agreement.  That fits the profile of #6.  Possible.  Just throwing it out there.

  4. So says George Stephanopoulos.  Should be obvious by now that any pick by Blagojevich would be blocked by Senate Democrats if it got that far.  Hopefully the Illinois legislature will strip the Governor of his power to appoint a replacement and start impeachment proceedings tomorrow.

    Blagojevich still has the formal power to appoint who he wants to Obama’s Illinois senate seat — but it’s not going to happen.

    Republicans and Democrats I’ve spoken to in Washington, DC and Illinois today assure me that there is no way that Blagojevich is going to be able to pick that senator now.

  5. Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr.

    From Political Wire via ABC News:

    Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL) is the anonymous Senate Candidate 5 “whose emissaries Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich reportedly claimed offered up to a million dollars to name him to the U.S. Senate,” federal law enforcement sources tell ABC News.

    Jackson Jr. said this morning he was contacted yesterday by federal prosecutors in Chicago who he said “asked me to come in and share with them my insights and thoughts about the selection process.”

    However, Jackson claims he is not a target of the investigation.
