The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund has thrown down $200,000 on an ad buy targeting GOP Rep. Marilyn Musgrave. The Hill has more:
Earlier in the week the organization endorsed Musgrave’s challenger, businesswoman Betsy Markey, in a release assailing Musgrave’s environmental record as “atrocious.”
“This is just the beginning of a sustained campaign, and the rest will be rolled out in due course,” said Jessica Brand, an Action Fund associate.
Musgrave has been a traditional target of third-party expenditures for the past several cycles, and it looks like this year will be no different. Will the constant barrage of negative ads finally do Musgrave in? The internal polls — from both sides of the aisle — look dicey for Musgrave.
In other Colorado news, the League of Conservation Voters has been ponied up $125,000 on media buys and $10,000 on door hangers on behalf of Democrat Mark Udall last week, bringing their total investment in the Senate race to over $375,000.
Could make a serious impact on this race. I really think we’re going to finally take out Musgrave this time around. We have an excellent candidate and Colorado should run strong even in the 4th district.
Don’t think I’ve heard of them. Do they usually throw around this kind of money in elections?
Benefitted from $1 million in ads by a hodge podge of environmental groups against Richard Pombo. Musgrave is sitting on shakier ground so this alone could work. Target one nutjob per cycle and pretty soon the environmentalists will get back the respect they used to have.
Spreading the money a la Emily’s List does not give the same bang for the buck. If IIRC only two of the successful Democratic challengers last cycle spent under $1 million (including ads from friendly groups): Carol Shea-Porter ans David Loebsack and Loebsack was in a pretty even money match up with Jim Leach.
Markey’s on the red to blue lists so this one looks encouraging.
Especially like that one! The other is here.
In other news. Why the hell is the LCV playing it so safe?
Udall is going to win. Use your money somewhere that it’s needed like Oaklahoma.
Something about Markey fits. Last cycle’s candidate, Angie Paccione, I just never felt fit the district. She impressed me more as a classic big-city liberal rather than a Tester/Udall type of progressive. I have no idea if her positions matched the impression that was left but I just felt that way, and that impression does not sit well in a R+9 (or is it 7?) district.
Markey reminds me of Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin. A charisma such as hers should work well. I think we finally found the right candidate for the district.
CO-04 shall be ours.
One of the few non-political charities that I give to, taking out one, if not my least favorite Repbulican. Good times to be had by all!
came out big for Tom Udall very early and promised to spend a significant amount of money — along with a few other environmental groups. They aired ads during the primary attacking both Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce (Udall had no primary opposition).
But I think they’re going to go ahead and back away from the NM race and go to other races.
