Former Representative Rick Lazio, a Long Island Republican who rose to prominence by challenging Hillary Rodham Clinton in her first Senate race, is exploring the possibility of running for governor next year.
In recent weeks, Mr. Lazio, who retired from Congress in 2000, has had conversations with Republican elected officials, party leaders and fund-raisers to discuss the pros and cons of a possible candidacy, according to three people he has consulted about the race.
It’s a pretty sad state of affairs for the New York GOP when the only guy on their bench who is publicly considering this race is a pathetic retread who got pounded by Hillary eight years ago and pulled a disappearing act ever since.

I want that open seat in NY-3. No retreads who no longer hold seats. The NY GOP might as well put up any old Joe, plumber or otherwise. Risk and reward, guys. No risk, no reward.

Then it’s hard for me to understand why he’d be looking at a career change, since JPMorgan just bought Bear Sterns during the global financial crisis last fall. Unless Lazio is smarter than me in terms of business and he realizes that sooner or later his company’s going to go down as well, and he’s looking to get back into Congress as a rebound.
He’s like a poor man’s Dick Zimmer.
