Weekly Open Thread: What Are Your Favorite Snack Foods?

James and I got into an extended discussion last night about the many virtues of hummus, so we thought, why not an open thread about snack foods? Just please, please don’t play to stereotype and tell us that you love to eat Cheetos in your mom’s basement.

It’s sad that most of our modern puns, especially those of a sexual and/or racial nature, are derived from snack foods.

  2. would be that my favorite snack food is caviar and champagne in the back of my limousine, on my way to George Soros’ office to pick up my check.

Had Tedisco prevailed in the historically Republican district, the thinking went, state Democrats would have sought to break it up, maybe throwing some of its G.O.P. areas into Republican John McHugh’s 23rd District while pushing some Democratic areas into John Hall’s 19th District or Paul Tonko’s 21st. Or something like that.

But with Murphy in the seat, Democrats will want to protect it, meaning they’ll be in the market for a different G.O.P. district to carve up. And, with just three Republicans left in the New York delegation, King’s Long Island district could make an inviting target-especially with the incumbent now flirting with a run for the Senate in 2010.

The article goes on and on, but includes some history of the 2002 NY re-districting.

    Man, NY politics is “interesting”.

  4. I especially like anything involving sour cream or cheese and onion or chives or scallions.  On the other hand, I also appreciate the Lightly Salted variety of Lay’s, because I can eat more of them before my lips feel shrunken.

I also like crackers (preferably with a bit of salt, and maybe some sesame) with some sort of cheesy/creamy spread.

  5. Bem and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey

Fresh italian bread dipped in fresh chopped garlic (not just the jar kind)

Instant mashed potaoes combined with cheddar, fresh onion, and bacon bits.

    Waldorf salad

  6. Tater tots

    Strawberry Shortcake

Chips or Nachos & Homemade dip – great for NFL sundays

    Quiche

    Potato Skins

    Cheese $ Crackers

    Cheesecake

  7. What is hummus? It’s a very tasty, diarrhea-like substance!

More seriously, I just had hummus and pita. So this open thread is creeping me out a little.

And I don’t know what qualifies as “snack food” if hummus does but another SSP favorite Chocolate Babka is pretty damn close to heavenly.

Also, eating tofu in my private jet with Al Gore flying to New York to pick up my check at the previously mentioned Soros weekly liberal blogger check pick up.

  8. I went an entire week eating nothing for lunch but various kinds of cheese, some of them on black-pepper-poppy-seed water crackers with fig spread.  I mean real cheese:  things I’d never heard of before buying them.  Like pepper chevre, and huntsman (gloucester+stilton), and beemster, and dubliner, and wensleydale.  That was a whole lot of fun, and completely delicious.

Chips and salsa are another snack sent straight from heaven.  Except good salsa is VERY hard to find.  I need to learn to make it myself, except I think that will involve actually roasting tomatoes, which sounds like a real pain in the ass.

Have Kettle brand potato chips made it to the east coast yet?  They’re from Oregon, and the salt-and-pepper krinkle-cuts are some of the best drunk food there is.  Even good when not drunk, in small quantities.

I also eat an awful lot of peanut butter and jelly.  Usually I just buy the store-brand raspberry, but, if you go all out and find some unusual flavors at one of the green-leaning indie stores, there’s some fun to be had.  Raspberry-rhubarb jelly!  Sour cherry!

My buddy just introduced me to sugar-snap-peas in ranch dip.  They’re really sweet on their own, which is pretty cool — I didn’t know it was possible to eat raw peas in a pod, much less enjoy them.

I also make a lot of smoothies in the blender.  Frozen fruit and vanilla yogurt are a lot cheaper than the six bucks you’d pay at jamba juice.

And since I feel that my list is a little too frou-frou: Easy Mac.

  9. Most surprisingly awesome snack of all time?  Frozen grapes. Seriously, try it.

I’m also interested in VA-Gov (I think Deeds has a shot now), TX-Gov (those were some poor poll numbers, but I gotta think that some Hutchson supporters would defect if Perry won the primary) and MI-11, because I always am.

  10. Sometimes, when I’m in a snacking mood, I’ll sit down and eat a loaf of bread.

Yeah, an entire loaf. Sometimes a baguette, sometimes other forms. And I always feel guilty about it, like I’m going on some unhealthy bread-binge, but it’s just tasty. No butter or anything, just the bread.

I’ve never met anyone else that does that. I don’t know if it’s better or worse than Cheetos in my mom’s basement.

  11. I see hummus (red pepper hummus with cucumber slices and crackers) as a lunch food more than a snack food, though.

Umm….reduced fat Cape Cod potato chips. Cool ranch Doritos. Salt and pepper Kettle chips. Garden of Eatin’ black bean tortilla chips with Green Mountain Gringo roasted garlic salsa. Pretty much anything in the candy family.

This is why I’m not thinner and why I have to worry about my cholesterol.

  12. is my favorite snack food.  It is more of a dessert but I treat it as a snack, those pints come in the perfect one serving size (hahahaha) and I can’t help but get one once a week at least.

Granola bars is up there, as is pitas and hummus (love having a huge middle eastern population in MSP, so many places to go).

My guilty pleasure that is really a snack but I turn it into a meal is Cool Ranch Doritos with Frito Lay jalapeno cheese dip that comes in the little can.  I can dominate an entire can of that with chips for dinner instead of an actual meal.  My parents give me two cans of it and a bag of chips in Xmas stocking some years because that shit is my ultimate guilty pleasure.

  13. From what I understand Arnold is pushing all of these initiatives, so I’d assume failure is a good thing.

  16. CO-everything: What’s going on in Colorado? It’s probably just a bad-quality poll (Aren’t 5% of polls supposed to be total crap even if they’re doing everything right?) but that probably warrents greater attention.

Five months after voters ended his 22-year congressional career, Connecticut Republican Chris Shays is living what he calls a post-election “nightmare.”

He’s out of the job he loved and – worse – stuck with at least $200,000 in debt that his campaign says is the result of wrongdoing by a trusted longtime adviser.

Shays has been forced to hire law firms in Washington and Connecticut to help unravel his campaign accounts, and he owes $100,000 in legal bills to those attorneys, according to his most recent disclosure report filed with the Federal Election Commission. By law, Shays cannot shut down his campaign while it still reports a debt.

In the end, Shays is likely to spend far more figuring out what happened, and when, than he says he’s lost through any alleged wrongdoing.

“The legal bills are now outstripping the debt,” Shays said in an interview. “The campaign fraud and deficit and legal fees will be well over $300,000.”

The allegations against former Shays campaign manager Michael Sohn center on the alleged unauthorized diversion of funds during the 2007-08 election cycle; in documents filed with the FEC, the Shays campaign has claimed that Sohn used the money for numerous personal needs, including meals, tickets to a Boston Red Sox game and a donation to his synagogue. But Shays said an audit of previous cycles is being conducted, as well.

Sohn has not been charged with any wrongdoing. But in a filing with the FEC, Shays’ campaign committee and its treasurer say that “the FBI has been informed [of the alleged embezzlement] and has begun a criminal investigation.” The FBI did not return a call seeking comment.

Sohn’s attorney did not respond to calls seeking comment. Sohn’s attorney, Alex Hernandez, told The Hartford Courant in February that he and his client “look forward to reviewing any available evidence or information and responding in the appropriate forum at the appropriate time.”

After loaning $22,000 to his campaign committee in late December, Shays has been forced to go back to his old supporters to ask for money to pay off his debts. The campaign has paid back $7,000 to Shays so far. But as of March 31, the campaign recorded slightly more than $199,000 in debts and obligations.

“I had one promise more than any other promise to my wife in my 34 years of public service: It was – cross my heart, on bended knee – I will never, ever run a deficit to win a campaign. Never,” Shays said.

“I first lost the election. Then my property taxes went up $15,000. Then, the day before Thanksgiving, I learned I had a [campaign] deficit, and the day after Thanksgiving, I learned it was caused by embezzlement by my, really, most trusted employee. November is the month I’ll never forget.”

Further complicating Shays’ money problems, the former lawmaker cannot now request more money from any donor who maxed out to him last cycle.

Shays raked in more than $3.77 million last cycle, including $953,689 from political action committees and another $219,000 from fellow Republicans and their leadership PACs, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

  18. that showed her up over giannoulias:

4/19-22/09; 600 likely Democratic primary voters, 4% margin of error

    Mode: Live Telephone Interviews

    Illinois

    2010 Senate – Democratic Primary

    Schakowsky 24%, Giannoulias 22%, Sen. Burris 18%

I assume while she is very undecided about entering the race, she’s trying to forestall the decision being made for her if all the establishment gets behind Giannoulias.

  19. Dramatic stuff in the Colorado State House.  Supposedly this has the votes to pass the State Senate as well.  It may come down to whether Gov. Ritter will sign or veto the bill.

The freshman Democrat from Fort Garland sat still as the House’s electronic board tallied the vote – a 32-32 tie. …

Vigil bit his lip and ran a hand back through his hair. Other House members stood up and looked his way as a silent minute dragged by. At last, he reached across the desk and pushed the green button for “yes.”

  20. 1. Pringles Light Sour Cream & Onion Chips

    2. Baked Ruffles Sour Cream & Cheddar Chips

    3. Snyders Hard Sourdough Pretzels

    4. Polly-O Twisterellas (I think they’ve changed the name recently)
