MO-Sen: Steelman May Not Challenge Blunt

Suck:

Rep. Roy Blunt’s path to the Republican nomination in Missouri’s Senate race got clearer last week, and it could become crystal-clear soon.

Former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman appears increasingly less likely to run against Blunt, and she acknowledged Monday that she is looking at a possible campaign for Blunt’s open House seat as an alternative.

Steelman said shortly after Sen. Kit Bond’s (R-Mo.) retirement announcement in January that she was leaning toward entering the Senate race, and for a while, it was a foregone conclusion.

But after unleashing a string of Blunt criticisms and opening an exploratory committee in April, she has grown quieter and begun evaluating other options. …

“I am always willing to fight for what I believe in, but I would certainly prefer to do it without further destruction to our party,” Steelman said, adding: “I want to find a positive avenue to move our party forward.”

I was really rooting for some hot wingnut-on-wingnut action here, but alas. The fact that Steelman herself is talking to The Hill about this suggests it’s just about over.

  1. a safer shot at a pick up.  No one to take Blunt down, no one for him practice defending his record against, before the general.

  2. I am a fan of Steeleman and was hoping she would run for the Senate. I think she would have been a stronger nominee than crusty old Blunt. But having her in the House would be a nice consulation prize.

  3. But we now have Steelman, Danforth, and Schweich on record saying good (for us) things about Blunt. How he is too “Washington” and basically how he sucks. Use Steelman’s to discourage GOP and the others to peel away moderates.

  4. I was worried that Steelman might beat Blunt.  She’d be a tough candidate.  If the Republicans want to diversify, she’s the type of candidate they should have recruited, but thank God they didn’t.

  5. get taken over by a Democrat?  And IIRC, she only served one term and most of those lower constitutional seats dont have term limits anyway.  Why not run for that again?  I spose she wants to move up but I dunno, serve your time lower and do what you can do.

But wow, both Senate seats could be occupied by Dem women.  Quite liberal for a state that didnt even go for Obama.

  6. I’m quite surprised by this. Is there some reason why she wouldn’t have been likely to win a primary? Too moderate for Missouri Republican voters?
