VA-Gov: Washington Post endorses Deeds

Tomorrow, the Washington Post will offer its editorial endorsement to Democrat Creigh Deeds in his now long-shot quest to be Virginia’s next governor.

Mr. Deeds, lagging in the polls, lacks Mr. McDonnell’s knack for crisp articulation. But if he has not always been the most adroit advocate for astute policies, that is preferable to Mr. McDonnell’s silver-tongued embrace of ideas that would mire Virginia in a traffic-clogged, backward-looking past. Virginians should not confuse Mr. McDonnell’s adept oratory for wisdom, nor Mr. Deeds’s plain speech for indirection. In fact, it is Mr. Deeds whose ideas hold the promise of a prosperous future.

Though the endorsement itself is not especially surprising, I think many will be moved by the Post’s unwavering praise for Deeds, and its willingness to defend his integrity and policy positions in spite of a somewhat lackluster campaign. One wavering Arlington County voter I know was blown away upon hearing it in full, and immediately re-affirmed his support for the Democratic ticket.

By what margin will Bob Shamansky win?

  1. …but it’s unfortunately a case that should have been made way in advance of two weeks before election night. I suspect McDonnell has already solidified enough of the GOP and non-affiliated bases to cross 50%. If Deeds can get his act together, perhaps the losing margin will be 3-5% instead of 7-9%. I just don’t think there’s enough time to catch up, and unless Obama stumps in Fairfax County for him, I suspect GOTV among the Dem base is gonna be tough.

  2. said that if the turnout was like 2008, Deeds would crush McDonnell. Except since Obama’s in the white house, Democrats’ don’t have much incentive to go out and vote since they don’t have a Republican to stick it too. Who knows, maybe the Washington Post can be rainmakers once again…but McDonnell is probably going to be sitting in the governor’s chair come January 2010.

  3. Some poll a little bit ago had Deeds down by the same Margin (at the same distance from the election) he was the last time he ran against McDonald, ehh McDonnell. That race went down to the wire. I believe Deeds lost by 1% or so. This with the fact that some highprofile Dems will be stumping for him gives me hope that a Deeds win isn’t as absurd as thought.
