AZ-Gov: Arpaio with big GOP primary lead

This is according to Rasmussen so it could be another push poll.  Gov Brewer is a distant third.  They also give Arpaio with a big lead over Goddard, ehich sounds VERY suspect.

If Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio decides to seek the Republican nomination for governor of Arizona, he will enter the race as the clear favorite. Incumbent Governor Jan Brewer places third in an early look at the 2010 GOP gubernatorial race.

  1. I wonder how Sheriff Bull Connor would fare with the Republican primary electorate in Arizona.  Incredibly, Ras shows him winning the general by 12 over Goddard.

Rasmussen’s samples seem not only Republican-heavy but super wingnutty, showing the Joe Arpaio’s and Marco Rubio’s of the world with big GE leads.

  2. Look at what happened in three Arizona races for Congress.  Wingnut JD Hayworth lost in 2006, GOP nominates nutcase Randy Graf in AZ-8, and loses that seat, and nominate nutjob Sydney Hay in AZ-1, and lost that seat.

So I don’t think Arpalo could have much of a chance against Goddard.

  3. First of all, “America’s Toughest Sherifftm” has nearly universal name recognition.  Secondly, his cruel treatment of prisoners, as disgusting as it may be, is genuinely popular amongst moderate/independent voters who are sick of hearing about how convicts sit in air conditioned rooms watching cable TV.  I’m sure once the election campaign gets under way and the real issues of how to run the State of Arizona come up, Arpaio’s numbers will fall, but I doubt this is too far out of line of what other non-Rasmussen polsters would find.

  4. R’s are seemingly willing to nominate true-believers instead of the electable types. At this point the Sheriff has maxed out his potential. People that follow illegal enforcement love him, most people know little about him. If he were to be fleshed out as a candidate I’m sure he would say some unpopular things on other issues.

To be fair I think that in a state like AZ tougher enforcement and security laws could motivate otherwise disinterested voters.

  5. is Secretary of Homeland Security in the Palin Administration.

Good Lord, that’s the most numbly puke-wrenching idea I’ve had all week. Ugh.
