November 30th, 2007: 52 people step forward and PLEDGE for KLEEB

Over 150 working days, $12,000 pledges

OMAHA — On Friday November 23rd, 2007 Draft Scott Kleeb for U.S. Senate launched PLEDGE for KLEEB, a program that allowed voters and activists to pledge support for Democrat Scott Kleeb should he enter the 2008 U.S . Senate race in Nebraska.  Interested parties were encourage to pledge 8 volunteer hours or one working day.  Pledged contributions were also encouraged.

As of Friday November 30th, 2007, 52 people have pledged over 150 working days and over $12,000 to an eventual Kleeb for Senate campaign.

“I am delighted by the reception PLEDGE for KLEEB has seen from voters throughout the state,” said Mike Nellis, editor of DraftKleeb.com.  “52 people doesn’t sound like much but candidates would kill to have that many volunteers this early in a campaign.”

Those pledged include: President of Nebraska Young Democrats, Kyle Michaelis; Phelps County Chair, Brian Osborn; and one self described, “life-long Republican.”

“The numbers are strong, and the people are motivated to preserve Democracy in the state of Nebraska.  But we aren’t going to stop here.  PLEDGE for KLEEB will continue to show Scott Kleeb that he has the support to win the Senate race, and build him an infrastructure upon which to launch his campaign.”

If you haven’t done so already, PLEDGE for KLEEB!

NE-Sen: Draft Kleeb coverage in Huffington Post

The Huffington Post wrote a great editorial about Draft Kleeb:

We’re still waiting to hear if Scott Kleeb will jump into this race. Scott the candidate supported by the grassrootsin Nebraska. He surprised everyone by running an incredibly competitive race in the uber-conservative Third Congressional of Nebraska. Widely considered to be gunning for a rematch in the Third District, Senator Hagel’s retirement has fueled speculation that Kleeb will enter the Senate race instead. This speculation has reached a fever pitch as former Senator Bob Kerry and Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey took passes on the race.

So far, Kleeb has played coy about his plans, but grassroots activists are working to build early support for him. There is a facebook group. There is a website. There are blog posts. And more blog posts.

No matter where you are, if you are interested in standing up to people who are willing to sell out our party for their rich Republican friends, then please take part in pledging to Scott Kleeb. Here, you can pledge money or volunteering time. Every dollar you pledge sends a big message to Ben Nelson that our party is not for sell. Every moment you pledge stands up to the politics of selling out our values.

    The current tally sits at:

    39 people have pledged…

    …999 hours (125+ working days)

    …$10,535 ($270.13 per person)

It’s time for the heart of the Democratic Party, the grassroots, to step forward and back a real Democrat in this race.

Have you pledged yet?  It can make all the difference.

NE-Sen: PLEDGE for KLEEB passes $10,000!

    PLEDGE for KLEEB tally…

    37 people have pledged…

  • …991 hours (124+ working days)

“Scott has a personality that can build consensus. He’s not full of himself, and he’s not one of those people unwilling to take risks.”

    – Former Republican State Senator David Bernard

Scott is our best chance to take back Nebraska.  This is real people powered politics!  Washington insider want to tell us who our candidate is – well I say no way!

October 26, 2007: Draft Scott Kleeb for U.S. Senate launches Pledge Drive

Allows Kleeb supporters to show early support

OMAHA – On Friday November 23rd, 2007 Draft Scott Kleeb for U.S. Senate will launch PLEDGE for KLEEB, a program that will allow voters to pledge support for Scott Kleeb should he enter the 2008 Senate race.  Interested parties will be able to pledge either volunteer hours (with a recommendation of 8 hours or one working day) or a donation of various amounts.

“We understand how difficult it is to support a candidate who is not in the race,” said Mike Nellis, editor of Draft Kleeb, “but that does not mean we can not show our support.  The 2008 Senate race will be an uphill battle for Scott Kleeb, but if we stand up in this race, than we can expect Kleeb to do the same.  I urge anyone who wants to see a real debate in this election to pledge one working day to Scott Kleeb.  Canvassing, phone banking, databasing for Kleeb will truely make all the difference in this race.”

The site name is stepforward.draftkleeb.com and was created in house by Mike Nellis.  It’s name is a take off of Scott Kleeb’s recent quotation, “It’s time for a new generation to step forward.”

Draft Kleeb is an independent organization hoping to convince Scott Kleeb to run for Senate in Nebraska.  It is not authorized by Scott Kleeb, his campaign, any campaign committee, or any political party.

Head on over and show Scott your support!

NE-Sen: Breaking News: Fahey will not run for Senate

(From the diaries – promoted by James L.)

    Crossposted at DraftKleeb.com

    Omaha World Herald reports:

Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey shut the door on a U.S. Senate bid Tuesday, but kept his options open for a possible run for a third term as mayor.

In deciding against a Senate run, Fahey said he was committed to getting several things accomplished as Omaha mayor, such as securing a long-term contract to keep the College World Series in Omaha.

“All the things I have on my plate, at this time, there are large items that need to be completed,” Fahey said. “And, I didnt think it would be fair to the people who elected me, if I left in midstream to go campaign.”

Fahey said he would decide sometime next year whether to run for re-election.”

This opens the door for Scott Kleeb to throw his hat into the ring.  Make sure to head over to DraftKleeb.com and show your support by signing the petition or donating to his potential campaign.

I want to thank Mayor Fahey for making a quick decision.  Scott Kleeb said he would wait until Fahey announced.

Nebraska Rep. Lee Terry continues to use Illegal Immigration to deny children health care

    Here we go again!

My only question is when will Congressman Terry run out of excuses to vote against this bill.  It’s one excuse after another:

From the Omaha World Herald Monday:

“Once again, illegal immigration is helping tie Congress in knots.

The subject has been injected into some seemingly unlikely discussions this year, including debate over a new farm bill. Now it has become a major hang-up delaying renewal of the popular State Children’s Health Insurance Program, which Republicans and Democrats alike largely support

Many Republicans who support Bush’s threatened veto…say the renewal legislation would give health benefits to illegal immigrants…the bill’s defenders disagree…

Against that backdrop, federal officials say they have no idea whether illegal immigrants have used the 10-year-old program because it hasn’t required proof of citizenship. At the same time, they say they have no anecdotal reports that participation by illegal immigrants is a problem.

That has prompted some Democrats and children’s advocates to accuse the bill’s Republican foes of using the immigration issue as political cover.

They contend that without playing the immigration card, it’s hard for GOP congressmen to side with Bush and oppose a kids’ health care bill…

“I feel they are sounding an alarm when I have yet to see any evidence there are a significant number of undocumented immigrants obtaining benefits,” said Tiffany Siebert of Voices for Children in Nebraska.”

So with no reports of wide spread use by illegal immigrants our own Congressman is making much ago about nothing.  (again!)

    As quoted in the story:

…Terry said the bill would have led to “taxpayer-funded health care to illegal immigrants.”

He is running out of reasons to be against what is an effective, affordable, and popular piece of legislation that will help millions of children in this country.

First it was that this bill would give Healthcare to people as old as 25 years old.  Which was debunked because the provision is for full time college students not everybody.

    That was lie #1!

Then it was that those who make $80,000 a year will get coverage under this bill which was a flat out distortion of the truth.  The real issue was that the state of New York requested to have funds to cover that level do to cost of living with in the state.  It was denied and the state government is planning on covering the fees itself.

    That was lie #2!

This next one wasn’t a lie, but an over reaction on Congressman Terry’s part.  His claim was that the bill would take kids who would already have insurance and put them on SCHIP.  True, but it is inevitable part of any program such as SCHIP.  But as countless experts will tell you, the amount of kids that wouldn’t have coverage regardless is worth the few what would.

    That was over reaction #1!

Now we find ourselves listening to the boy Congressman who can not figure out a reason to be against his bill.  I guess that’s what happens when you are an out of touch, and pampered by my tax dollars.  (which pay for the healthcare you deny to so many children)

As the article notes, there is no reason to believe that illegal immigration is a major issue with the SCHIP legislation.  They are making something out of nothing.

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley put it best:

“There’s absolutely nothing in this bill that would make coverage more easily available for illegal immigrants,” Grassley said. “Those who say otherwise believe what they want to believe, not the facts.”

100 donors, $1,000 in one week! (Draft Scott Kleeb for U.S. Senate needs your help!)

    DraftKleeb for U.S. Senate

The other day I was sitting in my living room wearing my UNO College Democrats hoodie when I picked up the living section of the Omaha World Herald.  Let me share with you what I read:

“The death knell is tolling for the Nebraska Democratic Party, whose last, best hope — a guy from New York — chose Wednesday not to enter the race for U.S. Senate…

The two-party system in Nebraska, in effect, has died.  If you aspire to high office, or even low office, you had better register with the GOP like almost everyone else.”

Now that should upset every Democrat who lives in Nebraska, has lived in Nebraska, has stepped foot in Nebraska, hell, it should upset every Democrat ever!  I know it made me mad, so I framed it and hung it in my office.  Motivation!

Now what are we going to do about it?  I say we make a statement in Nebraska, we give the Omaha World Herald a new story to write about.  That story is fourth generation Nebraskan Scott Kleeb who is pondering a run for U.S. Senate.  His amazing campaign in Nebraska’s conservative third Congressional district is a testament to what Democrats can and should be doing here in the state.

The last week has been a roller-coaster.  Bob Kerrey demurs, the Facebook group explodes, the website launch (DraftKleeb.com), and all the local press has blown me away.  But we can not stop this movement yet, and we need your help.

If you haven’t done so please join the Facebook group (also invite all your friends) and sign the petition.  Post about us on your blog, or a national blog you have yet to see us on.  (also, email me at mike@draftkleeb.com if you do so I can make sure to participate!)

The next Draft Kleeb initiative will be a fundraising one.

Our goal is to raise $1,000 and have 100 donors in one week.  We have set up an ActBlue page.  All the money will go to Scott Kleeb’s next campaign.  Whether it be for Senate or the House.  We have to show Mr. Kleeb that we will have his back in this race because it will not be an easy one.

This seat is winnable. While untested, Johanns and Bruning (I hear Pat Flynn is running too…) are powerful figures in Nebraska politics.  But they can be brought down if we work hard enough.

That work has to start now and it has to start with us!

The entire ticket in the state of Nebraska depends on who our Senate nominee is.  Believe me when I tell you how amazing out lineup is this cycle.  It’s full of candidates that can make the kind of change we all want to see. On top of that, a successful showing in 2008 will help Nebraska Democrats take back the Governors Mansion in 2010, the Omaha City Council in 2009, and maybe even the State Senate later down the road.  That is truly imperative.

We can not meet our goal without you.  Please just donate five dollars, ten dollars, whatever you can spare.  I plan on putting some in as soon as I get paid this week.  Help us make a difference.  Help us motivate Nebraska Democrats so we can begin to turn the tide in our great state.

    Help us…
