TN-8: Leading R, Fincher, votes in Democratic Primary during campaign

It is being reported on Tennessee’s leading statewide political news aggregate/blog, Post Politics (Tennessee Post), that a leading Republican candidate for the 8th Congressional District, Stephen Fincher, voted in the May 5, 2010 Democratic Primary. The May primary in Tennessee is for local county office holders, and in the case of Fincher’s rural Crockett County, the Democratic Primary is still the only primary held. This move still has to raise concerns with the die-hard Republican faithful as to why he did not simply abstain from voting in the primary altogether. This latest primary vote also raises questions if he meets the standards of the Republican Party by-laws to run as a candidate in a Republican Primary, as his primary voting record is overwhelmingly in Democratic Primaries when he takes the time to vote in them.

The 8th District has seen an unprecedented ad blitz by the top 3 Republican Primary candidates: Dr. George Flinn (Memphis), Dr. Ron Kirkland (Jackson), and Stephen Fincher (Frog Jump/Halls/W. Maury City/Crockett County/?), in which Fincher has been the first to go hard negative; and exclusively against Kirkland. Fincher’s attack ads depict Kirkland as a RINO whose medical PAC supports liberal Democrats in Washington, who personally supported Tanner and other local conservative Dems in the past, and is willing to do the apparently un-Republican action of working across party lines to pass legislation. Now with the revelation of Fincher having yet again voted in a Democratic Primary, during the campaign no less, it has to open his campaign up to accusations of hypocrisy. It is to be expected that Fincher will explain this away as wanting to have a voice in local politics; but that will only dig his hole deeper, as that is clearly the reasoning behind Kirkland’s support for local Dems and for his medical PAC’s support of key Washington Democrats.

State Senator Roy Herron (D-Dresden), the conservative Democratic nominee in waiting, has to be enjoying the increasingly divisive and fractious Republican Primary, as his campaign will be eager to attempt to attract disillusioned Rs, see them go to the Tea Party-ish independent, Don Janes, or see them simply skip the ballot line in fall. George Flinn, the 3rd man in the Republican Primary, may also see benefit in his potential role as spoiler/dark-horse candidate, as his campaign has relentlessly focused on job creation, a theme that plays extremely well with voters; unfortunately he actually lives in the 9th District (Memphis) and is relatively unknown in the rural 8th outside of his extensive media campaign.

This has to be one of the most interesting primaries going on currently, and chocked full of weird twists and turns the national media should be eating up.

TN-8: Republican Ron Kirkland raises 365K in one month

Dr. Ron Kirkland (R-Jackson) has sent out a press release to the media stating that his campaign has raised 365K for his run to replace retiring Democrat John Tanner (D-Union City). The presser states the total does not include any self-endorsements or loans. State Senator Roy Herron (D-Dresden) was criticized for pushing a large fund-raising total, within a month of his jump from the Governor’s race, that contained a sizable personal contribution. Whatever the case may be, Kirkland clearly is indicating he will able to fund a serious campaign to obtain his party’s nomination.

The Kirkland presser clearly takes aim at the NRCC favorite in the race, farmer/gospel singer Stephen Fincher (R-Crockett County), for being the apparent pre-ordained choice of “a small circle of Washington insiders, DC power brokers, and professional fundraisers”. Fincher has been touted by Republican leaders in Washington since late last year and and received sizable contributions from several key members of the House. Kirkland’s presser also touts his strong connections to West and Middle Tennessee after years of service as a medical professional, insinuating a lack of breadth in Fincher’s connections within the district.

A serious Republican primary is brewing in the 8th Congressional District of Tennessee. This will be a primary race worth watching.

TN-8: Herron (D) banks 675K for Tanner’s seat

The Jackson Sun has reported that State Senator Roy Herron (D-Dresden) has announced he has raised 675K in his bid to replace retiring Congressman John Tanner (D-Union City) since his entry into the race on December 2nd. A caveat of this total is that 250K are funds donated by Herron to his own campaign, which in itself shows a rather large commitment and ability to self-fund. This rather large figure however has not completely cleared the primary field for Senator Herron as retired State Representative, and former House Transportation Chairman, Phillip Pinion (D-Union City) says he is still considering the race and states he can raise the funds to compete with Herron if he chooses to enter the race.

On the Republican side of the aisle – gospel singer/farmer/agri-business operator Stephen Fincher, of Crockett County, announced shortly after the Herron release that he had 620K from two quarters of fund-raising. Fincher was the touted candidate of the NRCC even before Tanner’s retirement due to his fund-raising ability, but this has changed somewhat now that Dr. Ron Kirkland of Jackson has entered the race as of January 4th. Dr. Kirkland is a highly respected doctor and military veteran from the district’s largest population center, Jackson. Big strengths to Kirkland’s campaign will be his ability to raise money and/or self-fund, strong ties to business/professional community within the district, and links to strategically important northwest Tennessee via his family ties to Union City.
