Precinct Data Files for 34 States

Jeffmd and I have started working with Dave to bring election data to Dave’s Redistricting App. In the meantime, some folks (like Nico, doing Arizona) have delved into precinct-level data to add all-important political information to their redistricting projects.

Some states make this information readily available; others force you to collect it county-by-county. Below is a list of states which have complete statewide precinct files (graciously hosted by another Dave – Dave Leip of the indispensable Atlas of U.S. Presidential Elections):

And, as always, you can find precinct data (that isn’t otherwise available on the web) for a whole bunch of individual counties at SSP’s Document Collection on Scribd. Hope you find these helpful!

  1. that you guys are doing this. Thanks for putting the effort in to give teh rest of us an easier time. I like the knowledge of software and the patience to do something like it myself, so I thank you most heartily.

Thanks for the data too, I’ll see if i can use it, my North Dakota map has really had me stumped for quite some time 😉

  2. It’s cool to see you’re adding political data to the app, I have some questions though. Can you ask Dave if he’s thinking about adding more features? For example, it would be cool to have an option of coloring whole counties at once instead of doing each precinct individually. Also, it would be cool to have a visual representation of the racial (and now political) data. For example, a way of shading each precinct based on percent black, percent white, percent Obama, etc., so that you don’t have to check all individual precincts with the mouse in order to plan something. Is anything like that in the works?

  3. I love Dave’s app and really, really hope it can be made available soon for West Virginia.

Here in West Virginia CD’s are required to follow county lines so election data is not needed at a precinct-level only at the county-level.

  4. New York which you said on June 12th would be on pretty soon. It would be great to see Virginia but I also want to do California, my home state. It would be great if you could get them on soon, although you seem pretty busy with the political data. Thanks.
