NM-Sen: Udall Has More CoH than Pearce, Wilson Combined

Crossposted at New Mexico FBIHOP

It looks like Tom Udall is the big winner of the money race again.  Tom Udall

His campaign sent out a press release minutes ago touting the fact that he will enter the general election with $2,876,030 cash on hand.  Nearly three million dollars cash on hand — before June.

From the release:

Udall reported total expenses of $431,865 and finished the period with $2,876,030 cash-on-hand.

This is the third consecutive reporting period Udall has outraised both of his potential GOP opponents combined. He reported a strong total of over $1.3 million in the first quarter of 2008, which ended March 31, and in the final months of 2007 he raised over $1 million.

Not only did Udall raise more money than both combined, his cash on hand advantage is tremendous.

The AP reported on the numbers from Pearce and Wilson.

Pearce’s campaign spent more than $964,000 from April 1 to May 14, according to a fundraising summary released today by his campaign.

Wilson spent more than $776,000 during the same period.

Wilson, however, has a larger stockpile of campaign cash for the closing weeks of the hotly contested race.  Her campaign cash balance stood at $712,476 as of last week; Pearce reported $247,207 cash on hand.

Pearce raised about $357,000 during the latest campaign finance reporting period, and Wilson received contributions of about $291,000.

Combined,t he two have a cash on hand balance of just $959,683 heading into the general election — and with lots of money being spent by the two on television ads in the final days leading up to the primary, it’s not  of the realm of possibility that the winner could come out of the race actually in debt.

Even if the numbers stay where they are now, Udall has three times the cash on hand of Wilson and Pearce — combined.  Well, actually 2.996854 times the money of the two Republicans combined.

Not the way one wants to start the general election.

OR-Sen: Senate Guru’s Twenty Twenties for Jeff Merkley

{Originally posted at Senate Guru.}

As I noted in my wrap-up of the OR-Sen Democratic primary, Speaker Jeff Merkley and the Democrats have the grassroots, the issues, and the momentum.  All Republican Gordon Smith has going for him is a campaign bankroll just shy of $5 million.

Smith is unquestionably vulnerable.  With enough resources, Merkley will be able to cut through Smith’s spin and deliver the facts of Smith’s record to the voters of Oregon.  But, of course, he’ll need the support of people throughout the grassroots and the netroots.

To that end, I have added Merkley to the Expand the Map! ActBlue page and am announcing the “Twenty Twenties for Jeff Merkley” effort.  Basically, I’m pleading with twenty of you to contribute at least twenty dollars via the Expand the Map! ActBlue page toward helping Jeff Merkley oust Gordon Smith.  Can twenty of you spare twenty bucks to bounce a bum like Republican Gordon Smith from the hallowed halls of the U.S. Senate?

I think we can get twenty twenties in by the end of Memorial Day weekend.  Please contribute if you can.  Thanks yet again!

PA-05: McCracken for Congress — Weekly Progress Report — May 19, 2008

May has been a busy month and it is more than half over.  I have a few important things to announce this week.

1. CHANGES IN THE CAMPAIGN ORGANIZATION — We are going to make several important changes to the campaign organization this week.  These moves will bring in some new people with important knowledge, experience and expertise to the campaign and will change the roles of some people already involved with the campaign.

Henry Guthrie of DuBois will be moving from the position of Vice Chairman to Chairman of the McCracken for Congress committee.  Henry and his wife Molly have been very involved with the campaign since we began in January and I have great confidence in his political knowledge and abilities.  I worked closely with Henry in 2007 when we were both candidates for office at the county level.

Victor M. Ordonez will continue in the position of Media & Policy Advisor.  Victor brings years of political experience working in campaigns.  His prior positions have included working for Rep. Joseph Sestak (PA-07) and helping to get Senator Robert Casey Jr. elected in 2006.

Keith Bierly is coming on board as a campaign advisor.  Keith brings a wealth of knowledge to the campaign serving 12 years as a District Justice and 16 years as Centre County Commissioner.  Keith will be working on specific areas of the campaign to coordinate the efforts of the entire committee and we’re pleased to have him take this official role with the campaign.

Tim Fannin from the accounting firm of Catalano, Case, Catalano and Fannin will be taking over as Treasurer.  Running for federal office with all the required FEC and IRS filings takes a great deal knowledge.  Tim is a highly experienced accountant in the Clearfield area who has served on many boards and organizations including the Clearfield County Industrial Development Authority and the Clearfield County Economic Development Corporation among others.   With the appointment of Tim Fannin as Treasurer we are moving Milt Weisman to the position of Assistant Treasurer where he will remain involved with the campaign.

Recognizing the key role that Centre County plays in the 5th Congressional District, it is important to name someone to the position of Centre County Coordinator.   I didn’t have to look far to find someone with the credentials I was looking for.  Tim Wilson shares a passion for many of the same issues I’m stressing in the race for US Congress.  Tim is interested in alternative fuels, environmental issues, fiscal responsibility, health care reform, farmland preservation, support for public education and many of the other issues the McCracken for Congress campaign is all about.  An additional benefit of having Tim on our committee is, while he is now living in Centre County, he is originally from Jefferson County and will be able to help the campaign in those areas of the district also.

We’ve also invited Andrea Smith of Glen Richey to take over the role of Secretary of the committee.  Andrea has worked for many years as a legal secretary in the Clearfield area and has supported and assisted me in my past campaigns for school director and county commissioner.

We’re excited to have these people on board with the campaign.  We also have a number of people from every county in the 5th district offer to work for the campaign.  The solid organization we are putting together will help us run strong in every county in the 5th district.

2: CONGRATULATIONS TO TRAVIS CHILDERS — This past Tuesday Democrat Travis Childers was elected to the US Congress in a special election to fill a vacant seat in the state of Mississippi.   This was the third Democratic victory so far in 2008 in special elections.  The 3 seats in Mississippi, Louisiana and Illinois (the seat of former Speaker Dennis Hastert) were all considered to be traditional Republican seats and have been captured by Democrats.  It will take a great deal of hard work but we can accomplish this same feat here in the 5th Congressional District in November.

3: ARMED FORCES AWARENESS DAY — On Saturday, I took part in the Armed Forces Awareness Day ceremony in Clearfield.  This is the 5th consecutive year that I’ve participated as a county commissioner in this moving ceremony.  It is so important that we take time to recognize the commitment of the men and women who are serving and who have served in our armed forces.

The ceremony in Clearfield is always so special with emotional speeches, patriotic songs by the DuBois American Legion Band and special recognition of the veterans and active servicemen in attendance.  This year, there were several very special guests including 2 Gold Star Mothers and a Clearfield County veteran who is a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

4: This coming week, Kelly, Amanda and I will be spending Saturday in Tioga County to attend the Blossburg Coal Festival and participate in the parade.  We also will be traveling later in the day to Wellsboro to meet with people who are interested in helping with the campaign.  If anyone from Tioga County would like to meet with us in Wellsboro, please email the campaign at mccrackenforcongress@verizon.net.

DNC: The party needs unity and money, so…

The party needs unity and money, so I am trying to organize a fundraising effort – a moneybomb – for June 3rd.

June 3rd is, as most readers here will know, is the day that Montana and South Dakota will hold the final elections for the Democratic presidential nomination.  When the nomination campaign come to a close, many people will be focusing on who's winning and who's losing, but I thought that date would be a good day to focus instead on party unity.  No matter who we supported for the nomination it would be a perfect time to come together and show support for the party.

And because this race has been so long and so expensive, it has diverted a lot of money that would have otherwise found  it's way to the national party.  And right now, the DNC is badly trailing the RNC in cash.  The party will need money to support the eventual nominee and to continue it's fifty state strategy.

I've created a website to promote this effort:

  http://www.dncmoneybomb.com

I'm just getting this effort started, but I'm hoping this is something the netroots can get behind.  (I figure if the Ron Paul people can pull it off, surely dems can too!)

OR-SEN: Novick $ Jumps–$139K April, $1mil total, $30K in Two Days

[crossposted in part at Loaded Orygun, Oregon’s progressive community…]

Not having a second home or Chuck Schumer to rely on, yesterday Steve Novick made one more personal appeal to supporters in the primary, giving the whip to Seabiscuit as it were: help me close strong.

It sure is working; the Novick campaign today announced a quadfecta of eye-raising numbers for the supposed underdog:

  • Over $1 million now raised for the cycle
  • Just under $139,000 in April, a monthly pace 21% higher than for the three months of Q1 (which itself was 57% higher than Q4 last year)
  • A whopping $30,000 raised just since MONDAY.
  • Over $500,000 raised so far via ActBlue

From the campaign:

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Steve Novick's campaign announced today that it raised $138,983.98 in April 2008, passing the $1 million mark to raise $1,028,435.94 the election cycle.

"Our fundraising continued to accelerate in April with the vast majority of our support coming from right here in the state of Oregon," said Jake Weigler, Novick campaign manager. "We've proven that a grassroots campaign can attract the other green stuff too."

Novick's contributions continued to come overwhelmingly from Oregon, with $107,819.68 (77.5 percent) coming from within the state. Overall, 963 contributors gave to the campaign in April, 817 from Oregon. Previously, in the first quarter of 2008, Novick outraised primary opponent Jeff Merkley by 42 percent in itemized contributions from Oregon ($187,722.92 to $131,734.16).

Novick also continues to receive substantial online support from netroots donors. The campaign has raised over $30,000 online since Monday, bringing the total raised through the online Democratic clearinghouse ActBlue to over $500,000. Novick is currently the third highest U.S. Senate candidate in the nation on ActBlue, behind only Mark Warner of Virginia and Rick Noriega of Texas.

"When you look at how far Steve and the campaign have come, it is a rather remarkable journey," said Weigler. "He entered this race as an underdog placeholder. Today he's raised over $1 million and continues to lead in every public poll in the race.  People across Oregon are ready for a principled progressive who isn't afraid to tell the truth about what it will take to turn our country around."

[emph mine]

With fewer than two weeks until ballots are counted, money for advertising and GOTV is crucial. Also valuable as information, is the fundraising appeal power of the candidates with an eye towards the general election. Looks like there’s a late kick going on at the Novick camp.

SSP Cash Power Rankings: 1Q Senate Edition

Just as we did yesterday for the House race scene, SSP has ranked the Senate races this year in terms of their cash-on-hand competitiveness. This measure reflects the ratio of the challenger’s cash-on-hand to that of the incumbent. The only difference is that this time, in the interest of comprehensiveness, we’ve included several candidates who are defending open seats currently held by their party (marked in italics) and slotted them in the incumbent column — because, hey, we had to stick ’em somewhere. • These numbers were compiled from the National Journal and the Senate Guru.

SSP Cash Power Rankings: 1Q House Edition

Back in 2006, DavidNYC posted a chart tracking the top 50 House challengers in terms of their cash-on-hand competitiveness. In other words, he divided challenger CoH by incumbent CoH to arrive at a “competitiveness” percentage for each race. It’s a useful measure because, as David said at the time:

If you’ve got $500K, that’s all well-and-good – but your opponent has $2M, then you’ve got a lot of ground to make up.

So let’s take a look at the top 75 non-open seat House races this cycle in terms of each challenger’s cash-on-hand competitiveness, listed on the far right. You’ll notice that of the top ten challengers, eight of them are Democrats. Only 26 of the top 75 challengers are Republicans.

Indiana and North Carolina 1Q Fundraising Reports Round-up

The deadline for congressional candidates in Indiana and North Carolina to file their extended first quarter fundraising reports passed last night.  Let’s take a look at the notable numbers (all figures are in the thousands):

A few notes:

  • Andre Carson’s numbers cover 2/21-4/16, while Jon Elrod’s cover 2/21-3/31.
  • All other filings cover the period from 1/1-4/16.

Nels Ackerson and Michael Montagano continue to impress in deep red districts (R+17.5 and R+16.3, respectively).  Daniel Johnson, a Democrat running against the odious Patrick McHenry, is also raising a very respectable amount of money.  Democrats truly are blessed with a deep second tier of challengers this year.

On another note, Larry Kissell’s slow fundraising pace ($106K raised, $131K cash on hand) continues to be weak, despite his presence on the DCCC’s Red to Blue program.  Kissell needs to find money fast, because he won’t have the benefit of a surprise attack this cycle.  For a top tier race, we need to be doing better here.

OH-03: Mitakides Out-Raises Incumbent for Second Filing in a Row

Jane Mitakides, a Responsible Plan endorsee running in the Ohio Third, has reported $164,252.53 in total receipts for the first quarter of fundraising.

With money coming in at more than twice the rate of her opponent, Jane will be able to run an aggressive campaign that builds on the record-breaking Democratic turn-out in the March 4th primary and the changing dynamic of a district that is trending blue.

Some speculate that Mike Turner’s dwindling support is due to ethical issues and frequent exaggerations that are affecting his campaign’s bottom-line.

With her strong grassroots support, Jane won a competitive three-way primary with more votes than her opponents combined, and she still held on to more of her first-quarter raised cash than her opponent, who has spent more than he raised in Q1, even though he was unopposed in the primary.

Fundraising is a tangible measure of support for a race, and it’s big news when a challenger is consistently out-raising an incumbent.  It shows that voters are ready to make change happen and finally end the era of back-room deals and no-bid contracts.

This is a winnable race, but we still have a long way to go – and we’re counting on you to help!

1Q House Fundraising Round-up

(Bumped – promoted by James L.)

Tuesday was the deadline for House and Senate campaigns to file their fundraising reports for the first quarter of 2008. We’ve amassed a list of noteworthy fundraising numbers for House incumbents and challengers. While this list is pretty big, it is not meant to be comprehensive. If we missed anything, please post the numbers in the comments. And remember: these numbers are adjusted for rounding. The second column shows cash-on-hand, and the third shows cycle-to-date fundraising.

A few quick notes:

  • Democratic challengers who out-raised Republican incumbents: Ethan Berkowitz (AK-AL), Joshua Segall (AL-03), Bob Lord (AZ-03), Ed Chau (CA-42), Debbie Cook (CA-46), Annette Taddeo (FL-18), Raul Martinez (FL-21), Suzanne Kosmas (FL-24), Joe Garcia (FL-25), Walt Minnick (ID-01), Mark Schauer (MI-07), Kay Barnes (MO-06), Jim Hunt (MT-AL), Eric Massa (NY-29), Steve Driehaus (OH-01), Vic Wulsin (OH-02), Jane Mitakides (OH-03), Linda Ketner (SC-01) [note: her filing covers the period from 8/1-3/31, but the bulk of her fundraising was done this year], Rob Miller (SC-02), Michael Skelly (TX-07), Tom Perriello (VA-05), Judy Feder (VA-10), Darcy Burner (WA-08).
  • Republican challengers who out-raised Democratic incumbents: Deborah Honeycutt (GA-13), Jim Ryun (KS-02), Anne Northup (KY-03).
  • GA-12: After barely holding on in 2006, Democrat John Barrow draws a 4th tier challenger with abysmal fundraising ability. Unbelievable.
  • Overall, this was a dynamite quarter for House Democrats. Highly-touted GOP candidates like Dean Andal (CA-11), Rick Goddard (GA-08), Steve Greenberg (IL-08) and Lou Barletta (PA-11) are being outpaced by their Democratic opponents, and the list of Dem challengers with burgeoning coffers absolutely dwarfs the GOP’s. It’s no small wonder that the NRCC is turning to self-funding millionaires in their candidate recruitment process this cycle.
